I have been doing some thinking and it seems to me that one could remove the knuckles from a CJ Dana 30 and put them onto an XJ and gain lock-outs and the 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern. The only question I have is will the stub shafts mate to the XJ inners assuming the XJ has the smaller (X-262, I think) u-joints?

Well you need to look at the size of the C's on each axle. Do believe that the XJ uses a much larger C than the CJ 30
The early CJ used x260 joints and the later XJ's used x297

It is a cut and weld affair. As-in you need to use the outer axle forged end from the CJ tube and everything on out.

Do a search for "Paul Weitlauf" he is in WA and did this. Sorry, No link.

The early XJ/YJ used the 260 joint to but I do not think the knuckle physically fits the yoke on the diff. You would need to get the whole tube end off the old CJ front and then put them on the XJ front.

Now you have to have a custom outer shaft made if you want to run the 297 inners on the XJ axle and be able to fitthe hib.

Look in the "hybrid axle" album at the link in my sig to see just how I did this.

You will need to swap on the "inner" knuckles or knuckle yokes, and you will need custom length inner shafts.
