OK OK OK i know with 35s and a T-5 with 4.56 gears that my tranny is going to grenade soon. I am looking for a cheap tranny to swap in. I would love a T-18 or a NV4500 but i just don't have the money. what is an inexspensive swap for a good 5 speed (i hope) to put between a 285 I6 and a D300 that will hold up till I can get a better Transmition. HOw stout are the AX 15s? any help appriciated.

the t-18 is a 4 speed granny low, and really cheap. Cheapest option tho is to get a spare t5. Other options is a nv3500 or nv3550 out of a newer wrangler. I wouldnt waiste my time with the ax-15.

T176 would probably the best tranny for cheap.

T18 or 19 or NP435 from a ford would be next

IH T19 will be more expensive, but also good

If you want a 5 speed, you're looking at an AX15 or a T5, or lots of cash.

I take it that the Ax-15 is not a stout tranny and will not hold up to my 35s correct? thanks MO

Just have the T-5 rebuilt by a good shop and it should hold up to 35's. I had a T-5 rebuilt by a shop, they did a bunch of trick crap to it to tighten it up and I think it still cost me less than $600. The only reason it was that much is because they had to replace the 1st/R shaft.

AX15 won't hold up to a stock set up, much less 35s. Go with the T18. Stock bellhousing, stock t-case adapter, easy to find and repair.
Why do you list the 4.56 gears as a detriment to the T5? With the additional gearing at the axle, it would lessen the load on the tranny.
