I have a 90' XJ that needs some t-case work, right now I believe it has a NP242 in it with an auto and 4.0L. I don't drive it much so tell ya the truth I'm not very friendly with it. Long story short, transfer case started making noise and I checked the fluid level and it was just about dry! I've got prices as high as $1100 to rebuild it and as low as $575 for a bone yard special. Both prices seem kind of high for a T-case so at these prices I was woundering if there are any aftermarket options or other types of cases that will work for a 90' XJ with a Auto and 4.0L?
Help!

If you have a full time mode on your t-case then it is a NP242. You can go to the part time only case, the NP231. These are cheaper, have more parts avail., and are stronger. If youplan on ever modifying your rig, then go for a 231, otherwise I would just do the best you can to find a good price on a used one.

Prolly about the same price
I got quoted between $700-900CAN when my output shaft bent a week or so ago.

I happened to find a used np231 with currie slip yoke eliminator and rear cv drive shaft for $400CAN.
(I just finished bolting it up about 1/2 hour ago...i'm still in my dirty clothes.)

deals are out there

If you get a 231 and plan on lifting your jeep it is a good idea to price out slip yoke eliminator kits...the whole idea is just trouble from the start.
I don't know XJ's rear shaft length though so SYE might not be a necessity like lifted YJ's.

If you are replacing the t-case anyways it might be smarter to go for either a dana300 or even an atlas in the long run.

all depends on the plans for your jeep

Just an FYI....

JB Conversions (http://www.jbconversions.com) is selling an HD NP231 tcase. 231D chain & sprockets, larger synchro, and a short shaft for $750. ALL NEW PARTS! This is not a reman. All you need to add is a driveshaft (Tom Woods: $300.)

JB also sells a couple of other OEM tcases.
