Are outers on a TJ front end the same as a dana 44. By this I mean the ears that are welded on to the axle tube. My idea is to hack them off and graft them onto a cruiser axle and use 44 knuckes and what not. Does that make sense
no I was thinking of the mounting system to the axle. I have a couple of bare axle housings that I would like to cut the large C type ears off that attach to the tube and graft them onto a cruiser axle. Maybe a simpler question would be can I put 44 outers on a tj front end. If not what is the difference strength wise of a tj front end (dana 30) and a dana 44 front end. I am thinking from the tubes out.

I have TJ knuckles on 44 housing. I did it to get the bigger R&P and 30 spline, bigger diameter shafts while keeping my current bolt pattern. The odds of breaking the TJ outer is slim since it is so short and totally encased in the bearing assembly.
You might not be able to put the 44 knuckles on a TJ tubes b/c the 30 tubes will be smaller than the 44 ones. I had to turn the 44 tubes down to get the 30 knuckles on them. It would makes since then you would have to build up the 30 tubes to make it work. Not sure if that is a good idea... <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0">
