I got a good deal on a t-350 with the long shaft. I need to go to a short shaft. What needs to be done to do this. Do I need to pull the pan? It looks like if i pull the pump the guts will come out the front. Is this right? How many of a banana job is it? Thanks.

it's not that easy. you'll have to completely disassemble the trans cause the output shaft is one of the first parts that goes in the case when the trans is put together. call a trans shop and se how much they'll charge you. you'll have to buy new seals and gaskets plus the labor. i'd say minimum $125 and up depending on where you're at.

I puleld one of these "short-shafts" out of a TH350 core because I thought it was a rare piece. Upon further inspection, it appears to have been a longer shaft that was cut with a torch and, uh... polished with an angle grinder

Well, I got bored last nite and I pulled my old old short shaft T-350 core apart last nite... Took about 2 hr to dissasemble with no book/no special tools. Really is not that hard to do. On a 1-5 scale with 5 being hardest, I would say a 3. It really is not that bad. I found out why this tranny blew all the gears out at least
I would definatly recommend getting the book. Some tricky c clips that are fun to get out.

if you look in the back of the 4x4 mags you'll find a place that advertises how to videos on building trannies. 350's are a good one to learn on cause they are not very complicated. if you're mechanically inclined, and i guess you are since you managed to tear your old trans down, it should not be a problem. e-mail me if you decide to build it yourself; i work for a trans parts distributor and can probably get you the best deal on parts.
