I know this is an old subject but I have been searching for the last 2hrs on what exactly is needed to make the ford taurus electric fan work on a 22re application and there must be thirty different people saying 60 different thing about haow to make it work properly. All that I can really find is that you need a big relay.
I want to know if I head for the local parts store what I am going to need to wire in the fan.
I would like to have some sort of a temp switch that could be wired into the low setting on the 2 speed fand that worked in an automatic position.
second I want maybe a three position switch so I coud go
automatic
off
manual high for that occasion when I am crawling and need the extra flow or the auto temp switch isn't working.

any help would be appreciated.

That wiring kit that I just used for my 7m swap had a 50A relay... But for the tarus fan the wire size would need to be bumped up compared to the fan I'm using.

Easy solution: Go to the Ford dealer and ask the parts department how big a relay is required to use on the fan on such and such year and model of the Taurus. Also find out where it is located and when you go to the P-N-P to get the fan, get the relay. I swearsome of you guys try to make Rocket Science of of a simple mod, remember every once in a while thay have to use a BFH on their Rockets!!!!

Those are not ment for continuous duty, as you don't crank your for over a few seconds. Might work, but not what it's made for :flipoff2: I know people put those in WINCHES too, wrong application :p

just use 2 40 amp relays per each side of switch, so get 4 because you want 2 separate circuits
1 auto with thermostat control
1 to override on all time
get a S.P.D.T switch on-off-on

a simple cheap t-stat control

Adj. Fan Thermostat, Auto Zone, Imperial Automotive Products (Hayden)
p/n:226203, cheapest I have found yet that is reliable and works decent $17

Darren - would be so kind as to go into some detail about installing a Taurus fan?
Now remember, we're not all eletrical engineers so assume we don't know what you're talking about so please put it in plain english!

ok, this drawing shows a on-off-on switch & only using high speed on a taurus 2 speed fan
  • 1 position on is on all the time
  • 2nd position is through a adjustable thermostat control
  • center is off, IE: for water crossing

the relays should be 60-80 amp, or double up 2 30 or 40 amp relays. + you need double setup for this dual setup with S.P.D.T. 3 way switch.

As far as fitting taurus fan in a toyota, never did that.

I had one in my CJ-5, & I wired it on all the time ignition was on, with a on-off toggle to cut the relay ground for water crossing.

hope this helps:)

By the way, when looking for these 2 speed fans in the JY
mostly in 3.8L V6 Ford Taurus's
but I have found them in 3.0L Tempos, & some 4 banger escorts.
& the Lincon Cont will have these too I read.

no.. unless the switch you use can handle a 50-80amp load.

which, unless it's some crazy high-current switch, it wont.

thats why you use relays. and that circut that seabass posted will work, although it isn't really the most efficient way to do it. i posted a schematic on a really good way to do this in another thread, i'll see if i can find it.

many anchor windlass companies have used that style relay for over 30 years. also many snowplow set-ups are running this style as well.
I tested my set-up and was run for over an hour, niether the relay or wire were noticeably warm.

but maybe, I'll have to look out for the Taurus relay next time I'm at the J'yard. just to have it "Right"..................Karl
