Today, I tried a 2500 with the 6.0 and auto. I need some thoughts from owners...I presently have a Z71 with 5.3 and 3.73's and the 6.0 with 4.10's seemed perhaps from a short drive kind of sluggish. What kind of mileage are you guys getting ? towing vs. daily drive. I towed my rig with the 02' last year and although she seemed loaded...it did wring it out too bad.

I've got an 02 ext. cab 4x4 short bed that gets 15-16 highway or around town an depending on the weight and speed with the load i get 10 at my worst which was pulling my blazer with the 40's on down I-70 at about 80mph. If you don't want to spend the extra dough to get the duramax the 6.0 does fine, but if you can spare it get the duramax, i will next time.

I've got a 2000 GMC with the 6.0...like it. Had our first warm weather weekend, and mileage on a long trip went up quite a bit, but haven't filled to check. My last unloaded long run was 14.5 MPG and with either my truck/trailer or with a 4-place enclosed sled trailer it's about 10 in 4wd auto.

Mine doesn't have the Z71 package but I did have Bilsteins put on and it rides nice.

'02 GMC 2500HD 6.0/4L80E. Averaged ~12.7 MPG for a 4,000 mile stretch that I checked. Combo of every kind of driving you could imagine. Worst trip ~10 MPG - towing at above legal speeds on I-70 in Missouri. Best trip just under 16 running empty on I-44. Average 13-14 on backroads runnin' empty.

BTW, the "sluggish" feel you get is from the 2.48:1 first gear & the additional weight of the truck compared to a 3.06:1 first gear in your Z71. The 6.0 & 5.3 are of course based on the same block & even share the same stroke. The 6.0 has a much larger bore though.

SEARCH! :flipoff2: :D

2002 2500HD 6.0/4L80E 2WD CrewCab shortbed. Still staying consistant...
15 mpg on highway empty
12 mpg around town
11 mpg when towing the LandCruiser.

Worst Tank... 10 mpg (lots of hills, doing 75, loaded)
Best Tank... 16 mpg (for a while Houston had 55 mph limit)
Last week my "around town" was 14 mpg... spring break, less stop and go driving... more 40mph average on the commute. :D

Most folks report about 1 mpg drop with 4x4.

ONLY PROBLEM.... family size went from three to six after I bought the truck. Hmm... looking at 2003 Suburbans. Local dealer has FIVE 2500HD with 6.0's. Funny part is all of them are white body/tan interior. Hell of a good deal ($44K list, about $35K out the door!... 60 months 0%... uh truck is $511/month... new burb would be about $600 a month. Temptations.... ).

Part of me says "sell the truck, save the money... buy a '95 Land Cuiser for $12K.... " but boy I love to tow with this truck. Still need to get the beater Nissan running to save some gas on these daily drives when I don't have the kids with me!

Opinions from the disel side

2002 Crew Cab, Short Box, Duramax, Allison, 2WD.

Decided to go disel since the mileage on the 6.0 or 8.1 was too low. My co-workers are averaging 11 and 10 repsectively. Both in town numbers. I average 16-17 around town, 20-21 on the highway and 13 towing the YJ. Got an average of 10.5 towing 12,800lbs from Atlanta to Moab and back.

If it is any indication, I will replace my 2002 2WD Duramax with a 2002 4WD Duramax after my move to Seattle, WA. (Family snowboards and the YJ is getting crowded.)

If you are near Atlanta, mine will be for sale soon.
