Any insight would be great. Thanks guys.

So my old 72 chebby P/U lost 2nd gear. A buddy gives me a "recently rebuilt" TH350 to swap. Cool. Me and Ryan get it done last Saturday in about 20 beers. Results:

Reverse: Works like a champ. REAL strong.
Nutrual: Does what it should
Drive: Stays in 3rd. No kick-down at all. Otherwise seems to work.
2nd: Does not exist
1st: (the really wierd part) does a "push me pull you" thing. You can feel it. It wants to go, but cant cause it feels like it's stuck in reverse at the same time.

I'm lost. Did we swap out a bad tranny with a bad tranny? The guy that gave it to me is smart, trustworthy and a good guy. All the seals on it looked brand new. The little oil that dripped out looked clean and red.

Is there anything I can do? Any help would be MOST appreciated!

Is it a Lock UP type? Did you use the same converter? Are these the same problems you had with the first one?

Sounds like the valve body is clogged..

Same problem as before the swap? Sounds like it is getting first and second at the same time. Shift linkage problem?

sounds like a vacum problem. I had similar issues on mine, found a vacum line underneath that was disconnnected. Does the transmission work through the gears properly if you shift it manually ??

Ok. It's a brand new Torque Converter for one. I knew not to make that mistake. As far as shift linkage, it's an old truck. No cables. It's all bar and lever. The lever on the colum is old so there's no "notches" anyway. It "clicks" in the gear selections based on the tranny linkage itself I presume. PLus I can manually "manipulate" it a bit and that does nothing.

Like I said, reverse works killer. Then nutral is fine. Drive, it goes, but does not downshift or "kick-down". Then shifting to second, does nothing. Stays in 3rd. Then shifting to first, does that push me pull you thing.

Thanks for the hints so far guys. I'll try that stuff. Any more???

Oh, and I do have the vaccume line hooked up. I'll check that too though.

What did the bottom of your pan look like in the original trans? Was the oil red or burnt and darker or blackend? You also need to flush out and clean your cooler lines if they are contaminated. It does not take much to clog up and jam up the valves in the valve body. I would definity get some valve body gaskets and try cleaning out the valve body. It must be spotless if you want it to work 100% as it was designed. Good luck!

if you can get a tech book on the tranny
it will have a reference chart that will show what the tranny is doing in every gear
what is being held and what is being applied
it will also give you the fluid line presure needed to operate. i do not have one for the th350. it also gives you a trouble shooting section. if this doesn't help send me an e-mail and i will get a book wensday.
i am taking classes right now on rebuilding auto trannys. hope this helps
