The DKA Motorsports Comanche #4659 build

I’ve been toying with the idea of building a 4600 for quite some time now, and last year campaigned a 4900 UTV in Ultra4 and Dirt Riot with some success. The long term goal is to build a 4800 car but the budget for something like that isn’t there yet. My KOH Co-driver Lance Kirk and myself decided to see what was out for for 4600 cars already built but after some searching decided to just build one that we could know was done right and hadn’t been beat by years of racing. I ended up picking up this 1986 Jeep Comanche with a 4.0/AW4 combo. The guy also gave me another motor and a couple of heads and a spare AW4. The motor in it seems pretty tired with very little oil pressure so we will probably be going for a rebuild on that. The truck already has a Rough Country 4.5 short arm lift but all that will be junked. We will run a 3 Link front with some 2.5” resi shocks, and we haven’t decided on the rear leaf combo yet. We will probably run one tons to ensure the axles can survive the Hammers. I would like to redo the paint job in essentially the same scheme in blue, red and white to match the DKA Motorsports 4909 UTV.

**EDIT**

As you'll see if you go to the last page, the truck is now complete and racing. I want to use this spot on my first post to thank and acknowledge all of my sponsors, marketing partners, and friends.

I know Lance from when he lived in Durango. Get in touch with me and I'll see how I can help.
Right on man! Yeah any advice we can get will be greatly appreciated. We're going to start tearing down the interior and figuring out our bare minimum mod list, and then figure out our NEEDS vs our WANTS. The good news is that now we've done this once already, so in theory it should be easier this time, right?:laughing::flipoff2:

Couple of pictures of the truck before we really start blowing it apart to reinforce the unibody. We have a line on a set of tons that we are hoping to pick up this weekend, and a fellow Pirate is graciously letting us borrow his bender to make the cage. Should start coming together pretty quickly.

They are 1997 Dana 60 and Sterling 10.25 with 5.38s, Grizzly and Detroit lockers, high steer double shear knuckles and all the components to rebuild them. We are considering using the Ballistic Fab shave kits on both the front and rear differentials to give ourselves as much clearance as we can get considering we can only run 35s. After finding out that the UTV/4900 class is again getting shafted by Ultra4 at KOH with a Sunday race that nobody will be there for, I’m seriously thinking about not racing that class and concentrating on the 4600 at least for KOH.

Made some good progress on the truck this weekend. We got the unibody cleaned up for the incoming frame stiffeners, removed the front/rear stock axles, and cut off the short arm brackets. Once the frame stiffeners come in and get burned on, we'll be ready to start working on the cage and long arm stuff. We decided not to do the Ballistic Fab shave kits, we're just going to get some beefy diff covers for now on the axles.

You might want to double check on the 3-link front legality before you go about building it. My interpretation of the rules is that the suspension has to be the same type of configuration as factory, i.e. you can't do a 3 or 4 link on a vehicle that was originally radius arm, and you shouldn't be able to run Y-link radius arms or a 3 link on a vehicle that was originally a 4 link. I could be wrong though, but I would hate to see you build it, then have to change it.

Thanks for posting your build, I love these 4600 class builds. Some day when I have more money than I know what to do with, I would love to build me a stock class car, so I appreciate the inspiration.

All good. Thanks for thinking about that though. Check this out:

4. Coil-springs and related suspension linkage may be modified or eliminated and replaced with any coil-springs and linkage, and may be installed in any location and orientation, with the following limitations and exceptions: Coil- springs must be connected directly to the axle assembly and chassis and shall not be mounted in any way so as to yield any type of mechanical advantage, unless factory-equipped. Coil- springs shall not be replaced with any type of coil-over shocks, unless factory- equipped (if so-equipped, factory coil-over shocks may be replaced with aftermarket coil-over shocks).

Interesting. I wonder if there was a rule change over the years because I seem to remember a big deal being made about the Battlement Fabrication early Bronco from a while back having to stay radius arm

Definitely looking forward to this build. We ran a beater MJ in the Texas Gambler 500 earlier this year and had a blast. I would imagine running a built MJ in Utra4 is going to be worth all the time and expense put into it.

no, with the fairly tight timeframe that we have to work with to have this truck ready for the EveryMan Challenge Feb 2nd, we are trying to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) the build. I've been mulling over how to reinforce the shock mount on the frame, and I think the best solution is probably going to be just to remove the stock mount and build a double shear box that i can also tie the rear of the rollcage into.

The T&M frame stiffeners are installed, and we also got the front and rear windows knocked out. We took the dash out in preparation for the cage build, and will be doing a pretty simple sheet metal dash once the cage is in. We are debating just doing some simple gauges (tach, oil pressure, oil/water/trans temp gauges) on my side, and maybe having an OBD2 tablet in the center that the codriver can see with all the same data. On the codriver side we will have the radio, intercom, and switches for air pumper, fuel pumps, lights, horn, etc. I also really want to figure out a good “oh shit” handle set up as the ride is sure to be pretty violent and getting thrown around without anything to hold onto sucks. We are off to SEMA 2019 Tuesday morning and hopefully will get to meet with some of my 2019 sponsors as well as future prospective marketing partners, and next week we will be starting the cage build.

No real progress yet, ordered an Artec truss for the d60, diff covers, also going to order a Redneck Ram setup. A friend of a friend is going to help us with the cage build, he's done alot of drag car cage builds and is interested in learning more about the offroad race scene so that will be good. He's had cages survive 180mph rolls at the Texas Mile so I think he's definitely going to be a good addition to the DKA Motorsports team.

Made some great progress today! We got the main hoop, lower rocker bars, and A-Pillar bars done. We are hoping to get the rest of the cage inside the cab knocked out tomorrow and Wednesday before Brandon leaves for the rest of the week for the Thanksgiving break. We are also waiting for our products from Clayton Offroad to come in and I'll be installing that stuff this week hopefully. Our wheels from Method Race Wheels came in, as did our seats for both our UTV and 4600 from Corbeau Seats. :grinpimp::grinpimp:

We did launch our new YouTube channel under our DirtStyle brand yesterday, I have a TON of learning to do about video editing in post and figuring out the contrast, color, etc. If you're interested in seeing our unboxing video of the Method Race Wheels, check it out at https://youtu.be/PorXEimAJ44

The link to our Channel is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTyZOohc4jtFlH88AtdysTQ
I doubt it'll be informative for anybody on Pirate4x4, but we wanted to start with something simple.

For those of you who don’t have Instagram (follow us at dka.motorsports if you do) here’s an update on the build. The cage is 100% done now, seat cage and Corbeau FX1s are installed and most of the interior is back in. We started on welding up the Artec truss on the D60, and hope to start stabbing stuff under the truck and have a roller by the weekend.
