When I last posted about cooling issues, I had replaced my water pump, only to find my hoses were less than perfect, and one had a small leak.
Recently, the hoses got replaced all the way around, and the cap on the overflow was replaced.
Cooling was the best I've seen it.

So it snowed quite a bit the other day. The snow was up to the headlights on my Audi. My road wasn't plowed. Tried to drive the audi to work, only to have it hung up on the snow as it was too deep. Got it unstuck. Decided the rover would be the smarter vehicle to take.
So I get to the end of my unplowed(.5 mile) road to the main road and I have to plow through the snow bank built up from plowing. No biggie.
On the way to work, the temp guage climbs just past half and stays steady there. Course I'm concerned, but I got to get to work....its a powder day and the slopes need to open, and I have to be there to work.
Stop at one base area, clean out the snow that got caked in my grill. Go down the road and up a hill, and the cooling comes right back inline as normal.
So my questions.......airflow related.
Obviously airflow is a big factor in the equation. It goes with out saying I need to keep the grill clear.
Any ideas to improve airflow over the radiator?

Push Fan ?

If you haven't already got one, the obvious answer is an electric push fan. If you have - it's less clear.

Cheapest option is a big single fan from the scrappie on a manual switch.

If you are willing to spend some money, a big single or a double Kenlowe - or whatever the equivalent is in the States - on a thermostat is the answer.

Can't do anything to keep the grille clean/clear - anless you want to plumb in a hot water spray off the heater matrix:rolleyes:

got ac?
This is on the rangie right? You should be able to take the pusher from an 88 and plug it right in if you dont. Thermo controlled. If you have AC, I think even the 87's had a pusher, just hot wire it to a switch. Or, if no AC get just about any thin fan from a FWD car in a pic-n-pul. By a pre-wired switch with relay and wire into the cab.

Giving the hot air an escape will help a great deal. Hot air is trapped by the hood and a few holes, vents or louvers will allow it to escape.

Red rangie-its an 87, but there is no fan there, maybe the previous owner removed it. I'll see if I can scrounge one up some where.
Old scout
Heat escape vents were also a thought, wasn't sure if it would help air flow through the radiator, but at least it will reduce under hood temps. BTW your avatar is just wrong
 , but I like it.

Die lucas- could you test your suggestion on your own radiator, and report back the results?:flipoff2:

Seth if youare interested i may have a pusher in the garage. I'll have to go and fire them up to try.

:flipoff2: I like the holes in the radiator idea:flipoff2:

I have been meaning to put some holes in the side of my RRC's hood....maybe we should do a group hood mutilation...

Way ahead of ya - butchered the bonnet months ago been meaning to fill the holes with some stylin vents but never got there... Just maximises the bodge factor....

More holes this weekend as summer is well and truly here... touch and go whether I will get vents for these ones too..... :D

The Aussies use Defender wing vents two on each side - looks alright...

A body lift will decrease underhood temps by a LOT!

Has the radiator been replaced/recored/rodded???

While many here are enthusiastic about punching holes in their bodywork, I think back to an article in Hot Rod magazine back in the dark ages where the loss of cooling efficiency due to removing fan shrouds and opening of hoods was discussed. If we were not discussing Rovers (remember, they drive on the wrong side of the road-no offense to our misguided friends:flipoff2: ) I would comment that the original engineers designed the system to be most efficient with the hoods closed and shrouds intact, but then, I remember what happened to me last November and the ensuing cylinder head work...

The holes are generally for lower underhood temps for increasing ancillary life, not so much lower running temps. You are spot on Paul but the engineers never envisioned the D110 or the RRC to be shod with 37" rolling stock....

Paul,

Its a new radiator, a new thicker radiator.

I finally had a day off yesterday, first one since thanksgiving(I love the ski business).
So I popped the hood to find the shroud was loose on one side. it had popped out of its retaining thing, so there was a huge gap on one side......luckily the shroud didn't hit the fan. That gap couldn't have helped.

Devinchi/unnisamog....I may take you up on the pusher fan...may have to wait until after xmas and things slow down at work.

RJ, still thinking about the vents....like peters. So how did the vtxs winter run go? It was cold that night.
