I got the input from a calrocks guy. I get over an inch, probably close to 1.5" of engagement.
I'm hitting the seal/bearing retainer on the back of the trans with my current .750 ring. Theres a gap of 1/8 - 3/16's between the trans and ring. Going to a 1" ring will get the bearing retainer off of the trans, and still keep good engagement.
I found Novac's at 7/8" it would be nice to have the 1/8" cushion
It is normally required for the cherokee aw4 that has a positive stickout past the edge of the adapter and cannot be cut flush do to lack overall splines. Although not designed as a clocking ring, It does have the index lip which a lot guys over look its importance. You could use a gasket as a template to drill out your desired clocking
