Hey folks.

I’m going to Montana in a few weeks to pickup a 1950 CJ3a that belonged to my dad when he was a teenager. We tracked it down to an old relative that lives there and it has been sitting in a field covered for many years.

Likely it doesn’t run.

What’s the likelyhood it won’t roll? I can get some roller wheels and tires.

I have no winch on the trailer. If it rolls, is a come-a-long good enough to get it up on the trailer? Ratchet strap instead?

What would you take with you to go pick it up? I’m planning to take my trail tool set, CO2 setup, spare battery (if the starter works and the engine is not seized it will at least move).

As long as you can get the trailer ramps up to it you should be fine with a come along, worst case scenario and it's on flat tires with locked up brakes and sunk up to axles, eleven then an 8k come along should be able to pull it out with some sweat and time

Be time ahead by calling a rollback to recover it, load it on the flatbed, then back your trailer up to him and transfer Jeep onto yours.

I would expect the brakes to be locked up. I would bring along a set of tires pumped up a bit over max psi and plan on dragging it up on the trailer. I would do what I could to make my ramps and trailer deck a slick surface to easier slide over. It could be dish soap and water in a hudson sprayer. I would want something more than a 1.5 ton come along to drag it.

Bring a small compressor to inflate the tires and a come-along.

Expect everything to be bad, but, that the engine will turn over and run with starting fluid.

Expect clutch to be froze, brakes to be froze, brake lines to be rotted, fuel lines to be junk, fuel tank to be rotted, rust everywhere.

Been there, done this.

Also, it's been a while, but if memory serves me correctly, left hand lug nuts spin the opposite direction as right hand lug nuts. So if you're swapping tires be aware. (My dad's jeeps is late 1940s)

Personally I'd get a winch for the trailer, they are not that expensive. I wouldn't try to start it either. Just drag it on the trailer and work on it at home.

I don't see how you would run into trouble regardless, with that small and light vehicle.

Use a rope or tow strap to move it from where it is to wherever it is flat and open. Then load onto the trailer. Any comealong will be fine.

You don't even need ramps. Jack up one end with a bottle jack, jackstands or cement blocks behind the wheels, and back the trailer under it.

Now you can drag - skid onto the trailer with the comealong. THin scrap plywood under the tires as a skid if the wheels are locked, which they wont be after flat towing/dragging it first.

Repeat for the rear if needed. Trailer on hitch, tow vehicle in neutral, comealong the tow rig backwards to the Jeep.

That is worst case if locked wheels - flat tires - no ramps.

You'll be fine.

Success. It rolled fine. A harbor freight come a long and sweat and it was on the trailer.
