Very nice! A few questions:
- Why the driver-side hinge? Just more to walk around when you need to open it.
- Do the latch anchors interfere with the tailgate?
- Why not just go further out along the bumper and mount a single latchpoint under the other tail lamp cluster? Does the second one really add that much stability? I've seen several tire carriers that are hinge and latch, with a high tire mount...no vibration problems as long as the metal is padded at the latch.
- What's your hold open mechanism? My personal favorite is a hole and an alan wrench. Cheap, tough, and simple.

Drivers side hinge and tire on that side so I can see out the window in the rear view mirror.

Single latch would only be stable in one plane, with two you can stabilize vertically and horizontally, therefore elemenating vibration.
The hinge is angled to ease in closing, and to help keep it open. Like a refridgerator. I will most likely just use a spring pin, or a post.

If I understand you correctly, then you have the hinge and latch mounted on the bumper, witch is mounted on the chassis.
Your anchor point is mounted on the quarterpanel witch is mounted flexible from the chassis.
If that is correct, then in a very short time, you will starting to see stress cracks in the quarter panel, unless you mount your anchor point flexible.

Well, that may be true; but I don't think so. The quarter panel one is just a bump-stop for the top of the rack. It is only there to hold in place, and the bolts go through the re-inforcement braces inside the fender on the chassis itself.
We have been running the same design on another truck for over six months with no issues.
