I'm looking at buying a 1992 Chevy k1500 extended cab as a project truck. The owner had it pretty much stock, and it currently has the 4.3 liter engine. I know the current tires need to be replaced as was just asking for opinions on tire size for it. I'm not going to do much pulling, just some trails and silver lake, so I was thinking 31s would suffice for now. I plan to swap to a bigger engine eventually, and making it a bogger, but use it as it is as a start.

I don't mean to be double posting, but my phone doesn't want to let me edit. Basically what I'm asking is will 31 inch tires fit on this stock truck, not strain the engine too much, and will it be able to do what would like it to do?

Again it's a 1992 extended cab k1500 with the 4.3l engine. I do plan on swapping a bigger engine into it eventually, but right now would like to know if it would work without a swap almost immediately.

They will fit with the right rims and some trimming. Power wise depends on transmission and gear ratio. If you had a 5 speed with 4:10s, would be fine, but an auto with 3.08s would suck

It has an automatic. would that still work with a differential swap? And would I to swap both front and rear?

I was gonna stock with the stock rims first, so would lifting it be a better option?

This is a fullsize? Look in the glovebox at the rpo codes. Gt4=373 gt5=410 and gu6=342. I can imagine a fullsize ext cab with a 4.3 is a turd

My brother in law has a 92 ext. Cab 4.3, it even has a factory nv4500. But yes its a turd.

I know what i'm looking at, its a 4500. Chevy put them in some 1500's to increase the tow rating or something, needed the granny gear. Its a 2wd tho.

So should I just stick with stock tires until I can do an engine swap? I do plan to eventually swap, but if I could put bigger tires on it now it would be nice.

As of right now I do not know. I'm going to go look at it close up and climb in and around it tomorrow, hopefully hear it run. I guess the battery is junk and won't even take a charge, so I'll have to find a good battery or pray it will jump start easily. The code is in the glove box, or do I have to take a panel out or something? Would it also be somewhere on the axle?

I do plan to eventually make it a mud truck, so if it's not the 4.10 I'm still probably best to leave it stock until an engine swap occurs, correct?

Well it's in worse shape than I was lead to believe. I'm not gonna buy it now. The person sounded like it had a little bit of rust, but there is rust holes through the frame and pretty much the entire rocker is gone from rust. I don't feel a truck that is that bad of condition with what I would like to do with it is not worth buying. If I was just gonna use it as a beater it might be, but it's just not the right truck for what I'd like to do
