If your Torque Wrench is on...
20 ft lbs is PROBABLY not too much...
It is however 1/3rd too much and Could be on old bolts.
What could happen?
A bolt or two stretches and brakes.
This makes your new clutch kinda useless.
I'd follow the manual and use thread lock.
Now, the pilot method you used is pretty cool.
Grease in the hole and driving force is a very old mechanics trick.
But, will not work on pilot bearings as it just blows the seal an makes a mess. Works great on bushings.
The method you used for the bearing is a good tech tip.
