I figure I should post my tow setup and what I tow with since some might appreciate it.

I'll start with my trailer. It is a homebuilt pintle hitch deckover with dove (16+4). I picked it up on trade for a set of tires. It was in tough shape when I took it home but it was structurally solid. I wired it front to back as there was nothing, added safety chains, a jack, and replaced some of the decking (it was rotted out). Currently for lighting it has LED stop turn tails, an LED work light on the tongue, and a 24" LED light bar mounted under the dove for backing up. Future plans are elimination of the driveover ramps (I don't need the extra articulation) and complete deck replacement. I also plan to add rock lights ( I have an extra set laying around) under the deck along the rails to be triggered off the reverse lights to help when backing around obstacles.

Trailer

Here are some pics of when I got the trailer home and started working on it. I wired it with a junction box on the tongue to keep everything neat and sealed from the elements. The jack is a HF special.

Winch

I mounted up a winch on the front of the trailer. I welded channel to the front of the header and bolted/plug welded a receiver to it. I then made up a standalone winch system to mount to it.

The system worked great on her first try. I used it to pull my dead mower up on the trailer to take it down to the shop.

Debacle

On the second job my winch took one for the team. I picked up an S10 that I got for free from a buddy up the trailer without incident, strapped her down, and headed back to the shop. As it happened one of my rear straps decided to give up the ghost when I went over a significant bump in the road. The winch setup saved my bacon since it kept the truck from going completely off the trailer, but it's one time use only.

HF warrantied the winch (score!) and I installed v.2 of the system. I separated the winch/hitch mount from the battery box as the way i had it integrated before was too heavy. I also ditched the channel receiver mount and opted for a step-bumper style receiver bolted down through the deck and into the header. This design also means I will still be able to use the winch if I put sides on the trailer, which I hadn't accounted for with v.1 of the setup.

Tow Rig

I picked up a 1985 W250 with a 360/727 from a buddy of mine who runs a local fishing club. The truck has been a lake truck its whole life, so it was driven a few months out of the year and stored the rest (only 73xxx on the odo and very little rust). I have driven this truck quite a bit plowing ice roads and pulling bridges in the past. Here are some pics of what it looked like when I picked it up.

Plow truck to tow Rig

I removed the plow setup/cap from the 250 but not before hauling a Focus shell for a buddy of mine.

I stored the plow/frame in the field behind my shop for later (cue evil laugh).

First long trip

I had a front bumper laying around so I threw that on the truck and also upgraded most of the exterior/interior lighting to LED. to make driving at night safe (somewhat)

It just keeps running...

So I had been battling a loss of spark issue for a while on the W250. I finally got that corrected with a GM HEI ignition conversion (I have an in depth post about it in Dodge tech, but here are some pics

Exhausted

The truck had a tire warmer exhaust that was comprised of a glasspack and a 90* turndown. I wasn't a fan of that so I grabbed some 2.5" pipe and paired it with some mandrel bent sections I had laying around to make a rear exit system.

Truck hauls

I am storing the bridges that belong to the fishing club I bought the truck from. Here are pictures of bringing them over. Again, the truck/trailer performed flawlessly.

Hats off

I took the bubble light off the W250 since I have an LED multifunction lightbar I can replace it with if I decide I need advisory lighting. I used x-mas tree push pins and silicone to seal up the holes from the old bubble light. I plan on painting the truck at some point so I will weld them up at that time.

Trailer refit

I am currently refitting my trailer. The deck was finally to the point that it was unsafe so I have it ripped off.

In the process I have decided to eliminate the driveover fenders. The fenders are radical overkill, especially considering the use this trailer sees. My plan is to remove the fenders and replace with flat plate steel.

With the fenders removed I mocked up and measured to the bottom of where a potential flat fender will fall. Taking that into account, I should have a little bit over 3" of compression available. That doesn't bother me for normal operation, but I am a little skeptical that if I need to drive through a ditch or into an exceptionally tall driveway that I will need more clearance than that as the suspension articulates. My theory is that I will trim the opening of the "wheel well" with angle iron to keep the decking captured and then bolt a piece of 1/4" steel plate over that. When I bolt that down I plan to use springs on the underside (like mounting a body on a truck chassis) to keep the new "fender" secure but able to travel up. I think this will provide for the event I ever need to stuff a tire higher than normal I will have that travel available to me and the plate will sit right back down afterwards.

Does anyone see this as unacceptable? Do you have any suggestions? I want to keep the deck flat so that I can use this trailer for other things as well.

I can't say I have ever seen a trailer with the decking laid across the trailer like that. I kind of want to say that is a problem. Not sure, maybe it's just what I am used to seeing, but a trailer like that with only 4 crossmembers down the entire length doesn't jive for some reason.

I'd bolt the "flat fenders" down solid, and add bumpstops over the axle.
That had also been suggested to me. The more I think about it, the more I like that idea.

I can't say I have ever seen a trailer with the decking laid across the trailer like that. I kind of want to say that is a problem. Not sure, maybe it's just what I am used to seeing, but a trailer like that with only 4 crossmembers down the entire length doesn't jive for some reason.
I hadn't either before I picked this trailer up. I was also a little bit worried by the design, but I have put thousands of miles with everything from Jeeps to D250s on it so far and I took the opportunity to inspect all the welds/crossmembers now that the deck is off. I cannot find any obvious signs of fatigue so it seems to be holding up just fine (better than some new trailers, I would add). Personally, I wish the decking was placed the long way but I can't justify the the amount of work it would take to make that happen, considering the current design is pseudo-proven.
