What's up guys. Pirate newbie here. I've done some searching but...

I have a 97 tj and i'm thinking about putting toy axles in. I currently have the turd axles regeared to 4.56 so this would be nice for a one at a time kind of deal.

Anyway, what i've found:

Rear - 92 4 runner, 4.56 gears

Front - 91 4 runner, 4.56 gears w/o auto disco
90 4 runner, 4.56 gears with auto disco
91 4 runner, 4.56 gears with auto disco

I've looked into going the hp44/9, hp44/60, 60/60 combo but these toys are much cheaper, have 4.56's and i've heard good things about sturdiness. I can get one of the fronts and the rear for like $400 Cdn.

Questions:

1. Front's not IFS is it?
2. What's the width on these things?
3. Is the front drivers drop?
4. Whats the bolt pattern?
5. Will these hold up to 37 or maybe a 38" tire. I'm not the easiest on the skinny.
6. If i slap a locker in, it wouldn't matter if the fronts auto disco or not, correct?

Any other insite,advice, considerations, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

I too was thinking about using a toy axle for the rear. If you really wanted to you could use a 85 or so SFA (solid front axle) but your pumpkin is on the wrong side so you'd need a new transfer case. It's a lot of trouble. Some toy guys use a D44 up front anyway.

They are good solid axles, hold up to 37"s so I've heard and it's super easy to swap the 3rds.
the big problem is that they are 6 lug, though.

If anyone has pulled this off I would love to see it!

I put yota axles in my 53 jeep, but it was totally custom. I am sure you could run a flipped D300 or a cruiser tcase or ?

those yota axles are going to be narrow. the rear will not be to bad at 58" but the front out of a 79-85 is only 55". i guess you could run spacers in the front and and 2" BS wheels. just wanted to bring that to your attention. and yes anything after 85 will be IFS. everything you could ever need is here to learn so buy a star and learn it. well worth $20!

ive got a yota in the rear on my jeep. had 37 claws and 36 iroks holding up great. cheap axle to build . and i love the third member design. clearance is great , i have like 13 ". and yea ull need to run 2" spacers i did with 3.5 bs rims and had to problems didnt rub at all

Thanks man. What's your yota axle out of? From what i can see:

Toyota Rear Axle Widths:
55" wide, '79-85 4wd trucks/4runners - 6 Lug
58" wide, '86-95 4wd trucks/4runners - 6 Lug
56" wide, '79-95 2wd Trucks - 5 Lug
60.75" wide, '95.5-up Tacomas/4runners
66.75" wide, '93-98 T100 trucks

95.5-up taco/4runner would be a good because its only 3/4" wider than a tj.

What's your front 44 out of? Seems like a 80-91 excluding 83-84 waggy would be a good choice, drivers drop and 60.5". Correct me if i'm wrong.

Both are 6 lug but are they the same bolt pattern?

ok i have one of the weirdest builds lol the yota is from a 86 pickup(6lug) the 44 is from a 76 early bronco with chevy outters( made it 6 lug) i found the 44 already switched to 6 lug cheap. still tryin to figure out what kinda chevy its outta though lol , my wheel bearings are shot no idea what ones it will use . but yea the yota was 58" i used 2" spacers and it fits great. i love the axle strong and lots of clearance .

The old solid axle front are a passenger drop. Gonna be a bit of work to get it in your TJ Curt.
Chrisbuilt on JK runs a Toy 8" rear with a spool, 38s and a 350. Seems pretty happy with it.

what gears though. thats the only problem ive had with mine with the 488s the pinion gets REALLY SMALL . if ur going to drive alot on the highway , just have to take it easy. or this happends

downshifted on the highway and i heard a bang. i though it was my detriot unloading....i was wrong that was like after me first trip with it a week after i got home. so i dont think it was front the trip , bc ive been out like 10 times since then and never had a problem since. ive since just drove it a bit easier and its all good :)

i forgot 1 thing. if you choose to do yota axles the front housing can be fliped to make it drivers drop. just remove the third and knuckles flip the housing and reinstall. run wheel spacers in the front 2" BS wheels and wheel.

i was going to answer your questions and offer advice, but when it comes down to it, you dont sound like you have enough money to build the jeep right now. keep saving and find either a set of 60's or a parts ford truck with a blown motor and rusty body with them in it. rebuild em, regear em, and then put them in. if you are planning to go with 38's and a heavy foot, why bother asking if they will be strong enough?? im all for a budget build, but this spring im redoing my suspension because i bought a cheap kit and want more out of it, so bye bye lift kit. save your money and buy the good stuff, itll last longer and be stronger than a cheap easy setup. plus doing it right the first time is WAY underrated. i didnt, my brother did, and my wallet doesnt like me much right now.

you have to rotate the knuckles, and re weld new perches and brackets onto the axle. its kind of a pita job that still gets you ax axle that is 2-3" short that has to be filled out with wheel spacers so you can run a 4" bs'd rim. all this adds up to a lot of stress on the bearings and axle ends.
