Anyone here every rebuild there internal reg. alternator? I mean more than just replacing the brushes? I'm looking for info on replacing the slip ring. Everything else - bearings, brushes, diodes, etc..is pretty much a cake walk but the slipring looks like it is epoxied in. There are the usually deep grooves so it is definetly ready. I tried getting some info from a local rebuilder but they would help. Anyone skilled in this voodoo art?

I just rebuilt my spare a few weeks ago, new brushes. A guy that has done several of these told me a trick that he uses to rejuvenate the slipring. He puts a cordless drill on the armature to get it spinning pretty good, then gently holds a file on the rings to get rid of the grooves. Tried it, it did help, cleaned them up pretty well. Worth a shot. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

That does sound like a good solution but I would prefer to replace the slipring on mine. The grooves are deep and I don't want to grind the slipring to thin. Also the contact distance from the brushes holder would be increased which I also wouldn't want to do.

There has to be someone here that has replaced it before.
