At work the other night Im ranting about how narrow my cj5 is, and that I want a slightly wider axle under, not to mention the 20 has to go. My partner(whome I didnt even know wheeled)pipes up and says "go with toyota axles, wider, but not too wide, and pretty damn strong" I just stared at him for a while, but the more I think about it, it almost makes sense, except yota axles ahve their own set of problems.
SSo what do you folks think.

Im not looking for technical aspects I just wanted know if this guy sits a little too close the the white-out. Or if this is even a rational thought.

ya its very rational, but the old school guys are gonna put up about 10 posts telling you to do searches first and shite like that. You are forewarned ;):

the newer toyota axles even have electric lockers in some of them and up to I think 4.30 gears stock. check out www.car-parts.com

Yota axles came stock with 4.10 gears for a while, I dont know if they still do. Get the Super Birfield upgrade and run some stronger shafts and it can handle up to a 37" or so.

Well its good to know my partner wasn't sniffing whit-out again:D

but cheaper, I dont know about that. I just did a search at carparts.com and was comeing up with $1001 axles with no lockers. I might just be looking under the wrong yota.

Go to the for sale section and take a look around..... It shouldnt be hard to find a set of toy axles for @ $500 with stock 4.10s and all you gotta do is weld up the rear and your good to go. Then after a while you could go with a lockwrong or something better if $$ allows.

Don't pay more than $400 for a pair of Toy axles.

4banger manuals (90% of the axles you'll find) from 83-95 were pretty much all 4.10 geared.

The front is the toughie. Only made from 79-85, when they went IFS. Start haging around the Toy boards, and you should be able to find one for $150-$200.

The 79-85 rears are a dime a dozen, as they are 55" wide just like the front ends... all the Toy guys get rid of them because the tires rub the frame during flex in the back end. The IFS rear end is 58" wide and is the one that all the early model toy guys want. Rears are dirt cheap and everywhere.

TRD Tacomas had electric locking third members that can fit either the front or rear axle. FJ80 landcruisers had high-pinion diffs which also bolt into either end (but I wouldn't run it in the rear, obviously)... some of those were electric-locking as well. An e-locking third member is good for $300+, more for the HP version.

Get a set of Longfields ($230 if you send the stock birfs in as a core) and you'll be good in the front end with 36s. Add chromoly inner axle-shafts and you're good for 38.5x14.50s under SERIOUS beatings.

Had a buddy that competed in mud bogs. Ran 44" tires on a Toyota Pickup powered by a 454 chevy. The stock Toyota axle held up better than Dana 44's by a ratio of about 5:1. There are some good discussions on the Samurai site as a lot of guys run them on their Zuks. Front and rear 3rd members are interchangeable. Weight is decent. Availability is good. I have been considering them myself for my TJ. Just have to get used to those 6-lugs...

Got any pix of the fat block in a toy?!?!?! Id imagine it was a tight fit to say the least......:cool:
