how many people run turbo 22r's? and what's everyone's opinion of using them as trail rigs?

i found one last night, totally straight grandpa truck, all stock, clean as hell, a friend bought it to make into a wheeler, and lost motivation, he's keeping the trans and case though

so i have to put mine in it, which isn't that big of a deal, but what's teh general concensus (sp?) on using turbo's on the trail??

I have been kicking around the same thought.
I haven't had a turbo Toyota, but did mess with them back in the sand rail days. I think it would be great for an all around rig. no addional torque during low speed crawlin, but plenty of boost while cruisin to pull those 38's up a grade.

kinda my thought since i was debating on going back to 4:10 gears with my full width axles (cost) i'm just wondering how they do for idling up things with the lower compression

If you have crawler gears and can get the revv's up then you'll get some additional axle snapping HP. If you're running stock gears, it's kinda hard to make boost in the low rpm's unless you go to a different turbo. Not really worth it IMHO on the trail, but definitely good on the street with bigger meats

so 190:1 is no good? if i do go back to 4:10's i'll be 147:1

I would think that the turbo would be great for getting to the trail. Don't turbos do well on high altitude mountain passes?

As for crawling on the trail... what does a 22ret have for a torque curve? Maybe you can dyno it and share w/ us on the board??????????

Good point, I imagine you see alot of altitude change in Wa. Turbo would be Ideal!
You might want to do a search on OE turbo dependability problems.

almost the same power band as a regular 22r, just 1.5 lower compression, i think i'm gonna GET IT!

alot of our trails have mud on them half the year, so the turbo would be good for cleaning tires out too

The compression isn't that much lower. I doubt you'ld notice a difference crawling. You don't need boost crawling either, not if you have low gears. I usually idle over everything except the bigger rocks but uasually just need to crack the throttle to keep it from stalling. Torque curve and peak torque don't really matter when most crawling is done betwwen 500-1000 rpm. If it will idle it will work. If you don't do it share the info so one of us can.

A friend of mine has a T3/T4 turbo and he had temp problems while we were on the Lake Isabel trail. He had to shut the truck down and let it cool off quite a few times. It's fine around town though and spins 35x16 Boggers easily

Don't blame a turbo for his cooling problems. If his radiator is border line, Ya he'll run hot under load as any motor would. Don't bash what you don't know.

Go turbo. Man, I turbocharge everything I own. . Took my 7M turbo 4runner wheeling for the first time(still lack a front driveshaft). Went with my bro and a few friends, and the entire time I was sarcasticly complaining on how I wish I had more torque, then laugh a bit. I am running 4:10 gears with 35's, and do not have a torque problem with the turbo motor. Gee, wait till I get my 4.56's. Can also hold 90 on the highway with half throttle.

Yes, the turbo motor will require a larger radiator. I good 22R 4core shold probably handle the task. Although since I run a 3.0, I use a slightly bigger one.

Two words

"TURBO TIMER"

don't leave home without it.

Well, FWIW, I'm planning a Supra Turbo swap this spring. I think it will work great personally. I have plently of gears so I don't need much torque, but I really need help getting there. Some of these Colorado passes kill me on the way to and from the trail. I just want to keep up with traffic, and thats where a turbo should shine, higher RPM highway driving.

Uhh yeah, but compressing air produces heat, and turbo motors produce more heat than naturally aspirated. WTF do you think people run intercoolers and oil coolers on them for. Jason has remarked before that when he cranks up the boost he runs hot.

You have to blame the turbo for his cooling problems if it happens under boost.

I just got done building a close chamber Head turbo motor for my friend. he took it up too MCR and told me he love it. he's working on a inner cooler for the motor in order to keep the pinging down.
