A funny thing happened on the way to work today. Driving along on the freeway at 65-70mph and then nothing. Tranny just quit in 3rd gear. No noise, No warning, No fluid loss, No slippage. Fluid is bright red and clean. No burnt smell, No metal flakes, No Bubbles? After I pulled to the side of the road and found no external problems I tried to go again and it wont even shift out of 1st gear now so no 2nd or 3rd gear only 1st and reverse. Any suggestions on what could have gone wrong before I tear into this thing? <IMG SRC="smilies/crybaby2.gif" border="0">

the only externally accesible part that could cause that problem is the governor. it's located on the passenger side towards the rear of the trans and is held in by a small stamped metal cover (3X3 inches) bolted on with 4 screws. pull the screws, pop the cover and you'll see a mechanism in the center. grab it and pull; it will rotate when you pull it out, not to worry. should come out pretty easy, don't pry on it! once you have it out get a good look at the plastic gear atthe end. if it's stripped, go to your closest tranny shop and have them put on a new gear and check the gov. valve. should not cost you more than 20 bucks if that.
if that's not it you can e-mail me.
good luck!

i almost lied to you! there is one more thing that controls upshift: vacuum. check on the passenger side front of the trans and you'll find a small vacuum pod sticking out toward the frame rail. that's the vacuum modulator. get a good look at the vac. hose going to it and check it up at the manifold as well. if it's questionable, replace it.

you could still have an internal failure causing these symptoms but i'd check the modulator first and then the governor!
