5 cylinder diesel engine out of a G wagon or W123 car is the easiest fit. If you strip the backing plate, flywheel and clutch of the mog engine and put it on the diesel, it will bolt straight up with no conversion plate.

You have to trim the cab floor and make good, make a new engine mount for the front, and a few other jobs plumbing and lining up pulleys, etc... I am about 50% through doing mine, and its not that bad a job at all. You have to lift the cab off to do it unfortunately.

If you want any info, or you want to come and have a look, give me a shout, I am only over in North Wales. I also know where there is another of these engines in a breakers for £200 if you want one.
thanks for the info, i will be pulling the cab anyway as its fecked! its for a mate of mine, who will be along shortley.
Their is a kit to put the 617turbo engine in with little to no cab modifications. Thats the engine spoken of above. It is spendy. It rotates the engine 13 or so degrees so it fits better. Basically its a whole new bellhousing that clocks it over some. It comes with all the things you need if Im not mistaken. I have one on my mog. I bought it with it.
Hi

Im the aforementioned mate whos coming along shortly lol, Im sure the list of things to do are within mine and Tinks capabilites, shall keep my eyes peeled now.

Any other options would be appreciated.

Cheers
diesel engine

right then so you say the merc engine fits ?. i have maybe a 300 series engine. 3ltr five cylinder diesel motor out of an automatic car,
will this fit in my 404 mog. and if so what would need doing in order to fit it correctly. and lastly what sort of power gain should i expect from it ?
thanks for your help

Hi, have you considered just doing a high compression head swap and running it on LPG? Thats my plan... (Along with Megasquirt EFI).

Cheers, Al.

not worth doing unless its a turbo. Installing it is not easy. You have lot of work ahead. Lot of modifications (rework bellhousing, clutch system etc.) Like I mentioned earlier their is a kit available but expect to spend 2500 buks for it.

Your probably better off first going with high compresion head. Add an aftermarket throttle body Fuel injection system (use one for a Jeep ) or a propane set up. All this along with an upgraded civilian ignition system. You could add a turbo also but that won't help offroad.
OM617 seems like a decent candidate for a swap but the max power is 125 and max torque is 170. Most models were below these amounts. I realise that this is more power than the stock gas motor, but not by much. So to go to the trouble of doing a swap for only moderate power gains is questionable, unless you just really want that motor, got a good deal, etc.

I think that a better choice would be OM603, which is a 12 valve inline 6 displacing 3 liters or an OM606, which is the 24v version of the same motor. Because the displacement is the same as the 5 cyl, the motors should be about the same dimensions and the weight for all three is about 500 pounds dry.

If more power is desired, esp for the UK boys, these motors can be bombed up to 500hp and 750 pound feet of torque for a little bit of $$$$$$$$..

Diesel swaps have been done on these rigs for prob. 15years or so? Never heard of these being used for an install. I assume its a fitment issue?
Trust me, the OM617 turbo is plenty of motor for a basic 404. Unless you are adding alot of excess fat to the truck, you will find the OM617 to be excellent. And if you fuel and boost it, you can gain a fair amount of power, and then ad an intercooler to it and you can reach over 200HP

In my doka, I can easily do burn outs with a fairly fat truck on Iroks. And climbing hills is no problem as well as maintaining 65-70MPH.
I explored the OM603 for my swap but from research and help from people on schuman automotive forums it won't work without SERIOUS modification.
1. The starter is on the opposite side
2. Being a crossflow head that puts the intake in the same area as your right leg.
3. Length, although they are the same displacement it is five versus six cylinders.

The OM606 would be worse as the 24V head is even wider.

I have come to the conclusion that the OM617A would be the best fit. They can be tweaked for beyond 200HP if you have deep pockets.
The stock "MW" injection pump will not support that power as there are no longer available bigger elements to allow more injection of fuel.
The euro "M" pump can be made to support as much power as you dare by the pros at MynaDiesel in Finland. It will cost you about 2500.00 with the strong euro and cost of shipping.

I have not had the chance yet to ride in a 404 diesel but I hear it is a noticeable improvement over stock.

Hope this helps
Shawn

Can I also fit OM602.940 engine from Mercedes Benz T1 van?
Sell the 404 and buy a diesel mog from the get go, life is too short to waste it on hacking up a 404 with a lawnmotor engine trying to put a jet in it.

Why can't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Apparently the Turbo Perkins Prima (2 litre 4 pot Direct injection engine) is a popular fit in 404's in Poland.
Hi there, just bought a 404 and wanting a 617, is the one in north wales still available, could use the name or number of the breakers yard please.
