Im looking into swaping in some sort of diesel into my 85 4runner, and this thread is more less just going to be a place that i can put links/info that I find so i dont end up forgetting stuff and having to search for things Ive already found. If any one has any links to builds/swaps they know of post them up, but mainly Im just going to start putting every thing I find in here.

What I want in the swap:
1.To be able to run a mix of homebrew bio and pump diesel

2.CHEAP- the cheaper the better, what is cheap? Right now I dont know.

3.Power comparable to a 22re (112 hp at 4600 rpm and 142 ft·lb at 3400 rpm)-3rz (150 hp at 4800 RPM with 177 ftlb at 4000 RPM), I would like 100-125+ horses and 125-170+ft/lbs more is better, yet still be reliable.

Im not really set on anything right now, I do want to keep my w56 tranny and the tcases ect. Ive seen the 4bt brought up before but havent looked into it much. They came with a nv 4500 behind it correct? I like the torque figures something like 300 ftlbs and 100 hp. Any one know about adapting the 4bt to a w series tranny?

I am wrapping up VW 1.6TD install into a 2wd toyota pickup. I got it running but havent driven it yet. I used the Acme kit to mount to the transmission and fabricated the rest my self, nothing too complicated but was a bit time consuming. I am building this truck as a commuter and to run errands, if I ever decide to SAS it, I might swap in a TDI to get more power. With the mode I've done I am expecting at least the same power as the 22r I pulled out. I have a write up but it sucks since the host for the pics shut down:shaking:
Here is a pic of the engine bay:

here is the write up

I have a '97 VW TDI in my daily driver '86 4Runner. I'm using the Acme kit also. Mine is running full electronics which is not too common but the driveability and economy is great. You can go with an M-TDI also using a modified injector pump to delete the electronics if you want.
Power stock is 90hp 150lb/ft they are very easily modified also. You can gain 20hp and 50lb/ft with just a injector nozzle upgrade. I've done this and I'm pretty happy with the power and there is alot more I can do if I need more.
I'm running all VW accesories including the ps pump, 120amp alt. all in the stock location with the stock serpentine setup.

I have one crappy, small pic of it right now.

A 4bt into a mini is going to be a bit tight. It will fit, bc i have seen them, but they are over 700 pounds dressed and the last gen 4bt for an automotive application was 170hp and 420 pound feet of torque. That is a 16V common rail motor I believe, so the older motors would not have that much power. I dont know of a way to bolt a yota tranny to a 4bt, or if it will handle the power. Bellhousing is SAE 2 or 3 and some came with GM patterns for manual and auto trannies.

I would rather have the VW motor as its lighter and smaller and you can get the same amount of power out of it as the 4bt (maybe a bit less tq than the CRD version) Mods are available for VW diesels (TDI & PD) to get 250 hp and 400 tq at the crank. Though this will take some $$$, you can do it for sure..

Good luck and keep us posted...

So far its looking like the TDI is my choice. Ive more or less excused the 4bt from the line up

4BT

the weight. several places are saying approx 700lbs assembled and ready to go.
Lack of Toyota tranny options

The Toyota Diesels 2lt, 2lteII ect

keeping it all Toyota is just cool
More or less a bolt in deal, both the tranny and (I belive the motor mounts too)
But...
An import from japan is 3000$
parts have to be ordered through the stealership.
Not alot of aftermarket support
dont respond well to being juiced up notorious for cracked heads

Volkswagen 1.9 TDI

Lots of aftermarket support
easily available parts
available adapters for the toy trans
weight and general diminsions
But...
Its looking like its going to be pricy
I want to find a complete donor vehicle, or a vehicle that I can pull everything from + the adapter + larger injector nozzles, chip, ect

You might know this already but look for 99.5 and earlier TDI donors. They don't have the factory immobilizer stuff and it makes the swap much easier. If you use a later car, you have to use the cluster also. There are also custom chips available to delete the egr and even the MAF if you want to.

deepmud on here has a Samurai with a mechanical TDI engine and Toy drivetrain, that is another option. It uses the newer TDI engine with a hybrid mechanical injector pump.
You can find deals on them but you really have to look around. I searched around for a few months before I found mine.

If you want to keep it toy, looks like the 1kz-te 3.0 diesel would be a good swap. That's my conclusion after researching heavily for the last couple of days.

I agree too the 1kz is a pretty bad ass looking setup, but those are gonna be way outta my price range with a halfcut starting at 4000. Really I dont want to put more than 3000 into the whole swap, realistically it will probally be the end of summer before I can actually start looking to even buy a motor.

www.roadlessgear.com has an adapter plate for VW to W series. ACME has great support tho'. I got the ACME plate and modified Toyota flywheel.

The torque is great on the TDI - I am running stock toy tcase and 4.88's in the diffs and can spin 45" tractor tires at idle.
