Here is Pleasant Canyon road circa late 2005...

Looked like no one had been up that road in a while. Now it's a 2WD freeway.

I just found out that my mom has three boxes of slides of my dad wheeling back in the 60's, most of them around Panamint and Suprise. I can't wait to get them. I remember him talking about Seldom Seen Slim in my younger years. I will definitely be posting them up here.
i remember driving down to death valley from the bay area every year starting when i was about 7 until i was maybe 13 in our 79 cj. my dad brother and i had so much fun there with the guys that we went with. awesome memories. now i am 29 and have my own jeep would love to go there and wheel someday but the prospects don't look to good I have a ton of pics but no scanner they are 35mm
"They" didn't run the dozer into Pleasant cyn, claim holders did to protect the right to access their claims.

How come they (the mine owners) can run a bulldozer up Pleasant Canyon, making a mess out of it and we cant drive up Surprise Canyon leaving some tire tracks in the moss covered rocks?

BTW, I am a mining claim owner in Panamint City.

Yep, and thanks for putting up a good fight to reopen. Wasn't taking any position when I wrote that, just my understanding of how Pleasant got "repaired". Not sure if the folks who did Pleasant repair would have been granted a permit or not, due to the water issue, but personally glad they did it so now the greens can't say we are driving in the water up Pleasant, so less chance of closure.

We are on the same team. I've hiked surprise to see the falls and sure wish we could reopen it. One day perhaps if sanity returns to govt.

Look forward to seeing them!
Great pics, y'all. My dad had some cousins that tried to make a go of mining in the Panamints in the late 60s. They were a hard-bitten bunch. One time mom and dad had to make a run to Lone Pine for supplies and they left their son Bub to watch the claim. He was ten years old. That trip would turn into a two week adventure, (as they could in those days) so my grandma loaded up the Blazer to go get Bub, bring him in from the wastelands and give him some warm food and companionship. She found him up the canyon hiding behind some rocks with the 30-30.

When they left they forgot to bar the front door and the burros got in the cabin- of course the door swung inward... The cabin was papered with old newspapers and it looks like the burros liked the paste. When they eventually made it back to the cabin they had a nice surprise waiting for 'em inside.

We were all over the Panamints in the 70s, camping out of our VW bus- pops cut out the fenders and ran bigger tires, with the reduction gear hubs we could "wheel" into some areas that had the Jeep guys scratching their heads. I'll contribute some photos when I get a scanner, have lots of slides of the area from back in the day. Thanks for the mammories!

Panamint Memories

My Dad took me down to Panamint Valley Days with the CA4wheel in 1989. He had a Flat Fender with 32" tires. He took the Surprise Canyon run but We never made it to the City due to the amount of rigs with "huge" tires lol, that couldn't make it over all the water falls. We got to just after "the Jungle" and turned the whole convoy around and went back to base camp. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I built my own rig, a bad ass Bronco II, and went to Panamint in 2010, it was a great experience and hooked my Wife on 4wheeling. I ran the "Defense mine" run and listened to all the ol'timers talk about Surprise canyon. lol I had to sell her to fund my farm operation.:(

My Dad quit wheeling in 1993. He said that the Gov was grabbing up all the land so after 10 yrs of the fight he was going to quit while he was a head. :mad3: I picked up the torch, as best I can.:mad3:

He gave me his Jeep in my parents divorce:grinpimp:. I am currently trying hard to pull it from the grave:shaking:. Reading this forum has just re-inspired me:flipoff2:. I may not be able to wheel surprise canyon this year but I can get that rig running to go to Panamint Valley Days. If I can do anything to help Surprise canyon pm me.:flipoff2:

How can we get it back??? More clean-ups? Bring the BLM out there and show them how the hippies trashed it? Let them know how much better job we can do.
Line up 50 trucks, cut the gate and take it back. This is our land, too and a road, IIRC. And it was taken on false pretenses. The greenies and the libtard CA government pick the tune and we dance to it. We are losing the fight so it may be time to stop being reactive and go on the attack.

So is there an actual barricade blocking you from driving up the canyon? Sure looks fun!
