This subject was brought up in the ill-fated, but extremely entertaining "Super 44" thread, but I decided to start a new thread so more people might see it:

How? I'm not disagreeing with you, but this is the first place I've heard this... What, exactly do they wreck? I've got an Ox Locker in my front 44 with the Warn Premium Hubs and I was wondering if the fuses would be safe to use with my application...

I remember reading the note about not using them with Detroits in <IMG SRC="smilies/rainbow.gif" border="0">Quadratec <IMG SRC="smilies/rainbow.gif" border="0">, but I assumed that it was because of the extra torque (inherent in any locker) that the axle assembly would see so I thought you weren't supposed to use 'em with ANY locker...

So would they wreck my locker too?

He is right, they do say to not use them with automatic lockers. There was also mention of this in one of the mags, I'll see if I can find it.

No first hand info here, but here's what I've heard/read:

When the fuse blows, the sudden torque jolt snaps (for get what part) in the locker.

Doesn't apply to an ox locker. Has something to do with the sudden release of pressure on one side of the detroit. I don't remember wether it's warn or detroit who has the warning listed.

Cool. Because I thought they sounded like a pretty good idea. Maybe I'll get some...

That still seems strange that a fuse would do that to a Detroit when it blew though--I mean, wouldn't it be the same thing as snapping an axle--at least from the locker's "point of view"?

An Ox is not an automatic locker <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">

Also, I couldn't find the article, but I remember them saying that when the wheels are turned the u-joint still gives first. Well, almost all the u-joint failures I have seen have been with the wheel turned, so it's not going to be a big benefit IMHO to have the fuses in there. I've only ever witnessed one blow with the wheels straight forward, and it was a case of WFO throttle and a sudden drop of the front end.

For the price I pay for junkyard axles. I will be running straight slugs instead of fuse thingies. Don't think I'll have to worry about ruining the detroit in the front.

What entertainment value is there when you've eliminated the sound and visual of a front U-joint blowing to pieces. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

in the article you guys are talking about they were using a lockright....now comparing the strength of a lockright to a detroit is a joke to start with... i have totally blown hubs apart while racing my jeep with all 360 hp going to it at the time and one hub held and the detroit was fine. now, i wouldnt wantthis to happen all the time, and i wont use hub fuses. when i had a d-44 in the front, i bit the bullet and bouight a spare set of warn hubs. that way when i would break one(happened 3 times last year) i would swap in a spare and then send the bad one to warn....who replaced it.
I have since swapped in a d-60 in the front and I dont worry about it....and I have not broken anything

Well, Warn themselves will tell you not to run them with a detroit.

Also, there have been more than 1 article in the rags, petersons, JP, and maybe more.

And though they all tow the corporate sponsor line and say "thumbs up" if you read the testing results you will see that they are a pretty terrible idea.
