I have a buddies '86 or '87 IFS 22RE 4 runner in the shop to fix some braking issues. DDer on 31s.. When he is coming to a slow stop, the back left wheel grabs and skids unless you have good traction, it will instantly stop the vehicle. Then it's locked in place and has trouble moving until you break it free and it rolls fine. So, I'm going to pull the back left drum and see what's going on, I figure maybe someone forgot a spring and the shoes are catching at slow speeds. But another weird thing, it idles weird when braking, as if either the brake booster has a leak or a vaccuum leak. I'm going to at least check for vaccum leaks. What do you guys think, any advice?

I would try checking the brake pads on both side. If he is still running stock toy axle he will have that wait senitive brake leveling bar. You know that think attatch to the axle if those get messed up it will case the brake to lock up.

check and see if the other side is leaking. i had a buddy that had that problem. ever time he would hit the breaks the drivers side rear would lock up. it took us a while to figure it out, it was leaking out of the axel seal on the passanger side. just a thought. good luck

If the braking system is in disrepair, you may have particles blocking passages and retaining pressure in the line. Try a complete system flush. I did it to mine and the locking/sticky brake problem went away for me.

Well, on my way down to the shop last night the symtoms were aweful to the point where I was scared to drive it, left rear definetely locking up. Vaccuum leak easily found and cured (any idea what that dohickey is in the brake vaccuum line, some sort of PCV valve?)... I checked and adjusted the drum brake, everything looks fine. So figured maybe there was air in the system, did a bleed and replaced some if not most of the fluid and it looked good before then. Appears that there was some air in there.... So, on test drive, still happens first 2-3 brakes, then it went away. It is definetely still happening but much milder, not noticable on cement (except that you can lightly feel it grabbing and releasing) but on dirt that wheel is still releasing first. So I'm not sure... My though was maybe the drum cyl in the back left is sticking?? Shoes looked a little worn but not too bad IMO...

ideas?

my drivers side rear brake piston deal was dead and wouldnt go, and I had the pass side locking up HARD. My prop valve was also gone which sent all the fluid to the rear brakes so it was locking up even worse. My MC was also pretty screwed up, so that got replaced too.
