I was out strolling the local yard and saw this axle.
couldn't get a great look @ it cause it was cold and there was water all around the truck.
It's 8 lug, full float, has a removable 3rd member and a rear diff cover.
It was under a ~71 Chevy 2WD w/ a utility bed

Is there any aftermarket gears/ lockers for this thing?
It would be great to be able to pull the 3rd while the tire are still on like a 60/9 hybrid.

Eaton would be my guess.

Eaton HO72. Gear selection is whatever you can find junkyarding, no aftermarket availability at all. Locker selection is open, Detroit, or welded; with axleshaft swapping, you can put a modern 14 bolt Detroit in, but the actual Eaton Detroit is long since discontinued. Actual OEM gears included 3.something, 4.10, 4.56, and 5.13.

I believe the 3.x gear is a 3.90... and it was some sort of reproduction/aftermarket or possibly NOS version. I've dug through many of these thirds, and never come up with 3.x anything. 4.10 seems to be harder to find than 4.57 or 5.13

I do have a '63 Chevrolet Truck service manual that shows a 5.83 ratio for this axle. I've never found one of these either.

I've found a 3.90ish from time to time; heard tell of a 3.73, but haven't found one of those. Probably half of the ones I've seen, have been 4.10's, a quarter, 4.56's, and a very few 5.14's and 3.somethings.

I didn't bother calculating out exactly what the 3.something was, as we were simply spinning driveshafts to check approximate ratio, and upon realizing that it was just a bit shy of 4, we left it be (I've got no use for gears that high).

Down here, we can't usually find the 5.13's with any regularity, and when we do find 'em, it's usually at a yard where they've clearly been sitting for 40 years. Because of the pricetag that the junkman who's got that "highly desirable ratio" expects for them, they'll probably sit for another 40--I don't know a lot of guys who'll fork out three bills or better for a minimum-30+-year-old stock rear axle, let alone one with an open diff and rusted-solid drum brakes.

Never seen the 5.83 either.

The 3.90 gearsets are NOT chevrolet OEM, but are aftermarket. Give me a second to find the link.

I have heard people claim they have ratios such as 3.55 and 4.88. I think this is BS. The 3.55 is most likely a 3.54 geared D60 FF(which also came under similar vintage chevrolets), and the 4.88 is probably from an IH RA-15 rear axle. They look very similar. 4.11, 4.57, and 5.14 came under the 3/4 and 1 ton pickups. 5.83 was available in the P30 (probably why its rarer). 3.90 is aftermarket. Thats it.

u2slow emailed me the scan of the TSM showing 5.83's available. I would be interested in a set, but I will stick with the 5.14's I have now.
