It depends. Usually it is the OEM outer axle particulary if the 60 has the "big style" inners which do not taper down. A lot of the times when the outer axle shaft breaks it takes the lock out with it(occassionaly the spindle will swell or crack from the force of the stub shaft exploding). If the 60 has the older inner axle shafts that taper down the inner axle can let go before the outer shaft..But, usually the outer shaft still goes first. If running the big inners which don't taper down with the stock outers the stock outer is the link.If big inners and big outers(35 spline) then the u-joint and lockout become supsects..If big inners and outers coupled with drive flanges then the u-joint..Remember this is not set in stone and other things can break before or after what has been listed..I hope this helps.

Forgot to mention that if the u-joint breaks expect it to take out the ears on the inner and outer axles most of the time.

Although I'm not yet a 60 expert, I can tell you that the item that breaks first will not be a birfield.
When I get a 60 in, I plan on carrying full axles for both sides, put together. A set of u-joints, and a pair of slugs.
I don't think I will have to carry as many spares as when I had birfs.
I think with a 60 and my light right foot, I will not break near as much.
But I also remember thinking that once I got 35's and ARB's that I would be happy.
Guess not.

Well while we're on the topic, where would a guy locate a set of extra axles (both inner and outer) for a Chevy Dana 60? Please don't say find another 60, cuz around here thats damn near impossible, and I'm not dishin out what I just did for my front 60!
Would it be best to call like Moser or Dutchman and see what they can do? Or what?

Forgot to mention that if the u-joint breaks expect it to take out the ears on the inner and outer axles most of the time.

So, I guess upgrading to drive flanges, 35
outers & non greasable Spicer joint, that's
gonna be an expensive fix when I grenade the
joint, if what you say is mostly true
I may rethink the hub idea
