I know how to figure out what gears to use as far as compared to my stock drivetrain, but I need help deciding which to run now. I am considering 2 tranny's but not sure on x-case yet either. Np205 is overkill stregth wise and undergeared, 203 is ok geared, but its massive, I could use my Toy case, but Im trying to steer clear of adapters.
4.3, TH350 or 700r,??-case, dual D60's, 39.5tsl's is the plan

Ok so this post turned into, what case, what gears in the D60's, and what tranny to use?? This is all going into my 84 4runner. I already have the D60's and the 4.3, but im open to suggestions for the rest. No I cant afford an Atlas wish I could, and I have to keep the front output on the passenger side!

dual transfer case 205 and 203

Thanks, I keep forgetting about the doubler. If that is with the Th350, you think 6.17's would be too steep with a 700r? Just wondering. Or would the 5.89's be good with either tranny?

Personally, I will be running the following:

4.3L V6
TH350 auto
Dual Toyota cases
60's w/ 4.88's
38's to 42's

That will be a techincal "crawl ratio" of around 64:1 - and although I current have a ratio of 100:1, I have a manual tranny now and am not sure how the auto figures in there...

Personally, I think it will be more than enough considering it will be a relatively light rig.

I would love to go lower on the axle gears, but the 60 front I am getting already has the 4.88's... I am cheap... so they stay

Anyone have any thoughts on how the 4.3, TH350, 4.88's, and say 42's would be on the road? Like I said - I am new to auto trannies, so I have no clue.

BTW - mine will be a trailered rig, so road duty would be just getting from the trailer to the trail, or other short trips...

(Sorry to jump into your thread and ask questions - but we share similar issues here )

I would think you both need to run 5.13's.

As for what tranny - I'd go TH350 for cheap or 700r if you got the $$$.

Why 5.13's? I see no reason unless I was planning to drive on the road.... which I am not

If I want lower off road, I will add a 4.0 gear set

My D60's had 3.54 in em so I have to change everything. I am leaning towards the 5.89's since they are between the 5.38's and 6.17's. Im glad you tuned in DRM, I knew your project was almost just like mine and I guess we both need some answers as im new to the auto tranny thing too.

If I had to change both gear sets - yeah, I would go lower. But I am cheap, what can I say

I had a friend who ran a Jeep with a built MPI straight 6, auto tranny, Terra low Tcase, and 4.56 gears with 38.5" TSL's and that seemed to work great on and off road...

I figure the 4.3L/TH350/dual Toy cases/4.88's would be real similar, and actually have lower Tcase gears and lower axle gears - should be fine

I have 4.3 And T 18 and 4.3 Atlasand 5.13 gears And I figured He Would drive the Thing On the Street! unless You got One Ballsy motor??? I would say the Gearing Of 5.89 would Be Perfect for the Trail And The Road My.02cents

We have one just built with this setup 454 Turbo 400 4.3 Atlas 5.89 Gears With 42inch Tall tires And the Big Block does well But with 4.3 Witch I have ,, I would think the 5.89 gears Would Be perfect for the road and the trail!! I drive mine to the trail with 39.5's tsl's and man wish I had more gearing !!!! since Rev Cut's limit me too 5.38 and i have 5.13 and the auto takes about 30 horsepower to use !!!!

Yeah I would run 5.89!!! and doubler so i can have stock low range then have double low range that would be sweet!!
I think!!!

Gear for the Motor ! the 4.3 Has far more Credit for Power than it has,, My thought's

Mine Is 95 TBI 30,000 Miles And not tired But those Axles And Tires are Heavy!!even with 5.13 Gears!

Confused again

Ok, my D60 front is done and I am ready to order gears and a locker, but I am still iffy on what ratio to run. Here is my situation. I do have a 4.3, it is all dissasembled and I have to rebuild basically the entire thing (its an 85 TBI). I can sell it and buy a mid to late 90's 4.3 w/low miles, comp, harness, and just try and set it in, no rebuild. I will definetly spend more on my rebuild with the current 4.3 as it needs new everything, accessories and all. OR!!! I can get a late model TBI 350 complete for about the same price as the 4.3, and plan on swapping it in. I only give myself this option now as I see how heavy these D60's w/steel beadlocks and 39.5TSL's are. Tranny im pretty sure will be TH350. I am still undecided on X-cases, but it will either be single Toy case for now and add 4.0 gearset later. Or 203 and add a doubler later. Anyone think the Toy case w or w/o the low gearset can handle a V8? If I go 350, it would be mostly stock with exeptions of the typical intake(K&N), exaust(flowmasters or?)mods. I guess my weak link would either be Toy case, Toy u-joint at case ends? I do have, and could carry a spare Toy case:D .

Back to the main subject, does anyone have a recommendation on a ratio that would suit me whether I go 350 or 4.3? It looks like the 5.89's are what I want, but would 5.38's be more of a medium between motors? I will occasionally drive on the street, but never faster than 65 at the most. I figure if I go 350, it might rev a little high(5.89's), but I will probably have 42's in the future so that would make up some. Likewise with the 4.3, prob 42's for the future so ???? But I am definetly running 39.5's for a while. Please, help a brotha out!!! Im ready to order some gears!

350 and 5.89's and 42's. Go for the gusto!
Don't drive fast dammit it's not a hot rod. You will like the crawl better. Plus when you snap something from liberal use of the go pedal the bang will be louder. :D :nuke:
