Ok

Somone noticed something hanging from my rig today while we were wheeling. It looks like some sort of vent of some sort that broke off. Only problem is that i can figure out from where. The line attached to it go ot the vicinty of the gas tank and i can see much more unless i pull that tank. Anyone have ANY ideas?

I have an 89 YJ with the 2.5L if that helps!

Here are the pics! Thanks Alot

HMMM

Maybe that is why my rig is running VERY rich!

Is this part important? If so, what is it called so i know what to look for at the dealer or parts store?

thanks a lot

Looks like the vent in the top of the gas tank..Just snaps in the top..Should be two of them tied together with hose and than they go to emissions cannister. Have you had your tank out recently?? They just dont fall out! <IMG SRC="smilies/confused.gif" border="0">

***** No, have never removed the tank. The top of it appears to be ripped and/or dry rotted.

Should i replace it? What should i ask for?

Would this cause my shitbox to run really rich?

thanks

Difficult to say with F/I, could be anything, you should get a shop to hook up to your computer and check for codes. I don't think that that vent thingy could cause it. Do you have a "check engine" light on??
Did you try replacing your O2 sensor?

you can just buy new vacum hose to replace the piece from the tank to the canister just take the old one out measure it and heat to any auto parts store and buy it by the foot or yard.
As far as running rich I would try the o2 sensor first
I have had the end of the probe burn off and tell the computor that it was running lean ( could not detect gas fumes in the exhaust) so it would richen the injection up till it was pumping black smoke out
Just my thoughts on the matter

would a glogged muffler or cat cause it to run rich?

the O2 sensor is New and that didnt help it at all

I am thinking clogged exhaust, would that tell the computer to give it more fuel and then run rich?

thanks

A plugged exhaust might tell the computer its too rich, than lean it out.
Hows your air intake?/ (clean air filter)
Do you know anyone with a temperature gun, point and shoot type (digital),just shoot in front of cat and behind cat for temp difference.
That could be why its dieseling!
Will the Jeep drive and if so how fast can it go?? (clogged exhaust will limit speed).
Hows your fuel pressure?? maybe too high

Clogged exhaust or cat will make it feel like a major power loss I mean major

***** Just installed a nice and clean K&N Replacement

>>>>>Do you know anyone with a temperature gun, point and shoot type (digital),just shoot in front of cat and behind cat for temp difference.
***** Nope

>>>>>That could be why its dieseling!
***** The muffler was making sounds a few weeks back like it had marbles in it and then it went away! Weird Only diesals once in awhile and seems to have no rime or reason

>>>>>>Will the Jeep drive and if so how fast can it go?? (clogged exhaust will limit speed).
***** Well, its a 2.5L with 33's so it doesnt really go fast regardless but it seems very sluggish and if i am under 2700 rpms or so i get a nasty exhaust smell, if i downshift and get the RPMS up, it goes away (i assume this is because it is burning it)

>>>>>Hows your fuel pressure?? maybe too high
***** I assume ok

Well if it is felling real sluggish I would tend to think maybe a clogged exhaust of some type
Can tou break it loose in front of the cat and see if it runs any better?

Chris is right!
Cut it loose and let us know.
try it at the exhaust manifold, where the exhaust pipe hooks to it.
Good idea to rev engine b4 you unhook, to about 3000rpm. (feel the power)
Than after you cut it loose try it again to see if theres a difference, may need to drive it up the block.
Good luck, keep us posted

Fuel injected motors have a number of sensors that could make it run rich
...if you want to find the answer to your Questions have it analyzed by a computer.....the tech should be able to pin point the problem...if you want to do it yourself I suggest a book by by jeff hartman put out by motorbooks international called "Fuel Injection"....>>>good luck

Don't assume anything with EFI. Get a pressure gauge and test it and run the codes to see if the computer will tell you anything. Diagnostics with EFI and computers is really easy if you just follow the right procedures. Don't waste your time just guessing and assuming.

BM, I have that exact same thingy tucked away in the undercarriage, I don't remember when I first saw it but it fell out several months ago. I've been running without it since with no adverse effects at all. When it's time to pull the gas tank someday I'll replace it.

As for the other problem, yeah it could be exhaust. Checking the trouble codes for the FI system should be easy though, won't hurt to look. On alot of cars, all you really need is a jumper wire (or paper clip) and a an eye on the "Check engine light". Just learn how to read the codes and keep a code chart handy. HTH
