I want to convert my 91'Toy over to hydraulic assist.
Heres my ?s:

What length cylinder should I use on my SAS'd 91' Toy using low crossover and an 83' Toy axle?

What bore and rod diameter are best or recommended?

I'm considering a Chief cylinder that has a 3.5" bore w/a 8"stroke using a 1.5"rod with 1/2"ports.

What do you think of these measurements on the ram?

Any help I greatly appreciate as I'm just starting this project.
I tried the search but my box kept timing out.

all that i have seen are either 1 or 2" bore x 8" stroke cylinders. go to the general4x4 board and ask. there are alot of people over there that have done them and also ask the lake rat from the post above because he sells kits. he'd definatly be able to "assist" you. <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

I think with a Toyota a 6" stroke will be enough. I would use a 1.5" or 2" bore max. 3.5" is way too big. I don't know how you'll ever get a pump to keep up with that bore...you'll quickly run out of hydro assist when you turn the wheel quickly. Besides, if you go too big on cylinder (even if you have the pump to run it) you'll lose too much road feel and sensitivity.

The bigger the bore, the slower it will turn. This will cause a longer lag time from when you turn the wheel to when the ram actually begins to assist. I would go with a 1.5" if you can find one, but the standard is 2".

Tom stop by the house and look at my setup with the 1.5" bore 8" stroke cyl on the cruiser.It works killer and I only have $83 in my whole setup.
Don't forget about extra fluid capacity and a cooler also.

and oh the infamous Metalmender speaks! I have work the next 4 days til 6pm, maybe afterwards. I know your system works, I've seen it in action. I'm jealous and have to have one, no matter what. My box is still leaking from Paragon and my pump bearing is shot, so I'm looking at different options instead of going back to the 3.0 V6 stuff.

I am using a Columbus brand cyl that I got from the "surplus Center" @ 1-800-488-3407
in Lincoln,Nebraska.
They have way more stuff than Northern hydro, and have a large selection of orbital valves for the full hydro setups.
I picked my cyl because it had a shorter OAL and fit my stock cruiser axel better with it's limited space, it is only slightly larger then a stabilizer and fits nicely and works even better,plus a packing kit is only $8.95 if it starts to leak.

Sorry to break in on this thread but what steering box are you guys using with this assist steering? Anyone done this swap that has a Toy IFS steering box and a Dana 44?

See my pics on the same-ish thread on General... I've got an IFS box and a D44. Using a 2x8 ag ram.

I need to find out where to drill and tap the lines in the box.
