This is the roof line on my 69 FJ55. I can't just cut the top as I need it to be street legal and used in all types of weather. What would you do to fix this and help the structural integrity. It isonly on this sid efor some reason. I have a welder and can do sheetmetal work. In the front pilar the previous owner put what looks like a lead filler to repair the rust, kinda like what they used to do on the old restorations.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, for pillar work like that, the only "good" way to make a repair is by cutting and butt welding in another pillar. That's what I'd do, anyhow...

See if ScottZ pipes in, he's a bodywork guru, from what I've seen of his work around here.

Oh, and for the reason it is only rusty on the drivers side, it was probably a rust-belt vehicle at one time, the driver side gets salt-spray from oncoming traffic, the pass side does not.

Sad that salt can teach you so much about rust...and it's almost winter...

The lead in the seams on your 55 is Factory........ All the 55's around here (beautiful B.C.) are rotten in the front pillars
My Bro cut his out of his 55 and there is NO paint inside the channels
I would first cut out the rust and weld in new metal, then paint the hell out of everything.

For an even cooler take on the roof repair....what about hacking off the entire roof and sectioning in the roof from a Westfalia VW van...full fiberglass and a pop top tent.......that would be truly stylin.......

You could cut the rust then Weld in tube that would act as a "Rub bar" on the top edges and provide strength on the pillars.

The tube idea sounds pretty cool. I thought of doing something like that cause it would give me the perfest mounting points for my roof rack. I thought also of making an exo-cage so maybe I could kill 2 bin ladens in one giant whack!
