It's an axle from a Belgian 404. I have only seen these little breather tubes on the Belgian trucks. They are connected to a little breather tube on the main axle housing so you only have one breather tube that you need to heighten for deep water fording ;-)
hmm, well I guess that my diffs are Belgian too then. The vent tube on the each portal connect to those tubes on the knuckles via a rubber hose, the portals are vented into the diff housing. I was wondering why no one elses 404's had the same setup.
Swiss axles are like this too, it is a good thing to have on and it is a breather that vents into the housing so you only have one vent hose going up to a high place.
