I'm going today to purchase an '85 4runner. 4x4 of course, 30x12.5" Dick Cepek tires, 150k on vehicle, 1k on rebuilt engine. Runs and idles smoothly. Apholstery is in great condition, top has never been removed. It has fuel injection and A/C, as well as the notorious 'leaky knuckle' syndrome. Paint is in good condition (tan), and carpet is excellent (brown). I agreed to pay him $4,300 for it. What do you all think? Am I getting a good deal? Any tips as to what further I should look at? It is not an SR5, and doesn't have the tach, etc. Has tape player but no speakers. I'd post a link for you, but I'm afraid somebody would buy it.

Sounds a bit high on price to me, especially if you're gonna make it a trail rig. I picked up my 85 for $2500, with a newer engine but blown head. Offset the $550 head by selling nonused stuff off the truck on Ebay and came out fairly even.

The market varies, thus so does pricing...
I'm near LA in CA, and when I was looking I was in the "$3500 obo" range which I was comfortable with, and I found my 85 and traded an Eclipse that I paid $2600 for straight up. If there is a crap load of em in my area and I can find one for 1K but they are scarce in your area and sell for 4K that's just supply & demand. I say if you like it and are comfortable with what it's gonna cost you go for it!

there just don't seem to be as many toys here. Most of the toyota pickups around here have lawnmowers in the back. It's hard to find a 4runner in good condition around here. I know as soon as I buy this one I'm looking at I'll see one better and cheaper, but I can't hold out forever!

Dude your in my neck of the woods! Almost... I think after seeing it, it is a bit much $. I would just keep looking. Try recycler.com and traderonline.com you can find a cleaner one for less $. Or even think about getting a later model with IFS for cheaper and use the extra money to SAS! I've searched and found better than that for less and I am near enuf to know your market. Patience my friend. Hell I just found one lifted and locked in LaVerne for just over $5K not much more than what your talking about, try searching there before you decide.

I have been looking 4 2 years to get a idea whats out there and and now I'm ready to buy but I have seen prices down to $2000.
I think over $3500 is too much, espeacially 4 a stock runner.

Good luck

Doh! I just bought it today, it's in my driveway. I like it alot, the only thing that bothers me is it's leaking more oil than I thought, and that bothers me since it was just rebuilt 10k ago. I wish I would have read these posts earlier, one cool thing though: 'runner came with an extra set of rims. Their made by Boid, and supposedly cost $1200 brand new If I could sell them for $800 it'd b all worth it. That'd be like getting it for $3,500
