I'm rebuilding a DNE2 for my F350 and will also be rebuilding my BW1356. The DNE2 is filthy inside, but the bearings/bushings still look serviceable. When would it be appropriate to replace the bearings vs just replacing the seals when doing rebuilds?

If you're already pulling it apart, do them with everything else if you can swing the cost. Nothing worse than having to pull new parts out in 3 months to replace something you didn't last time.

Excessive play. Sounds like you're an engineer, look up the bearing by the service/part number and look at the specs.
Computer engineer. Does that count? I'll see if I can hunt down the service information. These DNE2 boxes don't have a lot of support anymore, and parts aren't easy to find.

I'm also leary about replacing OEM bearings with bearings from an unknown origin from an ebay kit. Seems like replacing a possibly good high quality bearing, with an unknown quality bearing could be worse than just leaving it. Maybe that's not an issue.
