Which header for 22re

27326 Views 36 Replies 24 Participants Last post by  Trogdorz
I have searched and can't find any answers. I have an 89 4runner with 22re. It has head mods, and a midrange cam. I am looking to buy a header, and from what I can tell a Downey or Thorley seem to be good choices. Anybody have any suggestions? Any help would be great...thanks.

Damn.. I'd shave my balls covered in ketchup, with a rusty knife in front of Roc DIC:eek: if I could see some real certified engine dyno tests of several aftermart headers on a stock 22!!!!!!!:grinpimp:
gNARLS
I agree gnarls, however traditionaly the try-y design is more about the torqe than a 4 to 1.
I've got a Thorley in my truck. It did add quite a bit of power. I can't say if it's more than one or another, but I like it.
Well, on my crawler now is an 85RE with the stock manifold to stock down pipe. I cut the down pipe right at the two into one collector just small enough to jamb it into a 2 1/4" pipe - then welded it together. 2 1/4" out through glass pack muff.

Running the LC mild camshaft - I can tell it has more low end power then my Downey Header, LC mild camshaft, 84 22RE has (it loves the upstairs end of the RPM range) They are running two different LC cam's however. The 85 22RE is using the newer LC mild offset duration cam - believe it has lower end to it. Either one runs like a stripped ass ape (is that such a thing???)

I think the stock manifold setup I'm using now actually adds more low end power also.
I have half a LC header for the front two cylinders and half a DT for the back two. That way I get good torque AND mad HP!

BTW fucker, it took me 45 seconds to find 110 threads on headers.

I heard the best headers were the ones for the passenger side of the engine
Y design Doug Thorley Header. Great power over stock.
Thorley makes the header for Downey, save a couple of bucks and buy it from Thorley. Good header, mine works great :D

Unless something just got changed the Downey headers and Thorley headers are totally different. The Downey headers while having their own issues seem to be much better. Just weld up the slip joint and it should be great for years to come. I've got 10 years and 150,000 miles on my Downey header.

I just put an LC Header on, and wouldnt use anything else. Top notch...but pricey. Look around the classifieds, that would be my first step and is actually how I found mine - otherwise pony up the dough. Their header stud kit is worth getting as well.

Mine's a Downey as well, I looked at the Thorley a buddy 'o mine picked up and they were identical, this was about a yaer and a half ago. Not raelly sure if anything has changed since then.

Anyone know if this is available seperately? I know the vibration problems with 22RE have a tendancy to work the outer studs loose.
Does the thorley header come with the pipe that has the bung for the O2 sensor? Will a 4wd header work on a 2wd?
I used old redbull cans into a folgers can, not the full sized can mind you, but the pint sized one:flipoff2:

Yes, the header stud kit is available separately.

Check on their site. Its worth the ~ $20 IMO if you are you spending upwards of $250 on a new header especially.
