I was curious to know. cheaper than a detroit and what the hell! that means I can save and buy an arb front!! besides 5.38's are goin in so i have to change the old carrier and have options.

I do the rubicon quite a bit and heard that they don't work to well.
any thoughts here?

my rear ff dana 60 is welded and i love it and have had no problems what so ever, so a spool is the same as what i have done just balanced better.
thanks

had my spool on the road a whoppin 3 times and I am ready to ditch it..

Might just limit the rear suspension instead cause when I turn corners the sucker leans over 45 degrees, hops n chirps too - outa control! I had a detroit before with no probs..

The only thing I don't like about being welded up is my turning radius went to $hit. I have to back up on many tight turns because I just can't make it around. I do like that it is predictable (IE, doesn't lock and unlock on the highway).

You have a CJ-5 right? I think that you need some decent wheelbase to run a spool. It seems to not fight so much. For example two of my friend have spools in their YJ's. Rockslut's wb is around 100" and it drives great. Goose's is around stock (94"?) and it makes a crapload of noise when he turns. Seems like the other thread that you started about extending your wheelbase may help you in this area...however, I don't think that you will be able to completly cure the problem.

I was running a Spool in a Dana 60 9CJ-7). I found the road manners to be much more predictable and actually smoother. And off road traction was a no brainer.

The only reson I switched was to go 8-lug and I found a 14-bolt with a detroit.

I've got a 73 cj-5 with a spool in the 9" rear. I have no problems at all. Very predictable. Wears the tires out quick though.

i know a fella who runs a spooled AMC20 wagoneer with 38" hawgs. wheelbase on wags is bout 110". he takes it on the road; also says it works fine. oddly enough, hasn't had any probs with the 20 yet.

yes i have had a detroit. It was very easy to learn how it acts on road and i like them but man hey are too much$$$$$ and being a fricken eenager as you all know it is hard to do this shit to your rigs not having a larger income like most of you.

I agree that thw welded diff is nice and smoothe and i guess that my question was dumb because a spool is a welded diff but obviously a lot cleaner lighter etc.

thanks

yep had lock rights for almost 10 years before the detroit. Detroit felt like an open diff, no probs whatsoever! Then I got the 60 and for cost reasons got a spool and I hate it so far. Probably because of my rear buggy setup, outside tires tries to walk under the truck, the track bar holds it back but it still leans and then hops outa control - detroit never did that.

Anyone wanna trade a spool for a detroit?

Brandon, what pressure are you running in the tires on the street? I bet it is like 15 or 20. I am running a welded 60 in my CJ and with low pressures, it squeals and pulls. Run the tire pressure up to about 30-35, and all the problems with running a welded or spooled dif almost disappear, just a little squealing on really tight turns...

actually to be honest with ya I don't know. Tires n wheels sat for over a year and with all the granite in the bead they probably leak - been meaning to check that

I've been running a spool for 4 years. Two were with a Babbit Locker, and two with a full spool. I love it. No clicking, or clacking, no snap, or wind-up loke in a detroit. Your turning radius takes a beating, as the truck no wants to drive straight, and the extra wear on tires, but onroad is more predictable, and offroad is sweet. Not sure about mini spools.

I have a full-spool up front in my Dana 44. I like it alot. Sometimes it can be a little bastard to turn on street but other than that no complaints so far...

if you already have a welded rear why ask the question? you know what its gonna handle like. Are you worried about strength? if so a spool is the strongest option period, and mini is as strong as the stock carier
