Admittedly it’s an inflammatory title, designed to attract the maximum readership…please bear with me.
It’s because of the unrealized potential; the dream of what it could be but just isn’t quite.
When I first joined the board, a short while ago, the first 2 posts I read where about Coby’s wristed arms, and Jesse’s super U-joint project. Goddamn, I thought I’d found Nirvana – this was seriously good hardcore tech.
But over time I began to realize there is a huge amount of posing, flaming, bullshit, and self-aggrandizing chest thumping - a lot of it accomplished with some really juvenile Ebonics and such.
The problem is, you have to filter out so much BS just to get the meat, and it's very tiring.
Take a look - there are sooooo many postings of supposedly "badass" rigs sitting in driveways. No tech info, no details, not interesting at all....just transparent trolling for compliments...and usually the masses are only happy to oblige with pages of "that is sick shit" and "your rig is the crack pipe man" - WTF does that mean???
And how it seems many have taken the idea of "I will be frank and state my opinions" which is an admirable thing...and interpreted as “ I will be immature, juvenile insensitive, and basically be just a social hand grenade because I'm an asshole and I'll hind behind the "tough guy" reputation of the board”. Anyone who tries to respond with maturity and common sense will be accused of wearing panties. All very funny and entertaining, but hardly any use technically.
It has its place and seems to be very popular, but I fear I don't have the time for all the “filler”. I want hardcore tech and I want it all the time. Where people can discuss design principles, suitability of materials, interchange of parts, the relative merits of 1020 DOM versus 4131 tubing, and whether heat treating is necessary. Where people swap technical details of swaps and fabs and projects and what fits what….without the attachment of ego and self-worth.
I dream of a place where if a fella teaches you something, even if it’s in a blunt manner, you act like a man and thank him. Where people are secure enough to admit mistakes and learn from one-another without going into juvenile temper tantrums and name calling.
And where there is NO PLACE for racism or other discrimination, regardless of how well “justified” the author may feel. Where profanity is kept to a minimum and is used as effective emphasis and not as a replacement for effective communication.
I was thinking perhaps of a Yahoo Egroup, where members could read posts on-line or send/receive them via e-mail whichever they prefer.
In summary…no I don’t hate this board , it’s fine for what it is, but it doesn’t suit my needs perfectly, so I thought I would canvass for interest in something else. Namely, a group exclusively for technical minded fabricators and the like, with no chit chat, no discussion of events, no pointless bragging and flaming, where no one gives a damn what kind of "rig" you drivem but just in how you built it and why and what you learned, and where a person is judged by the content, not number, of his posts.
Any interest or should I just un-knot my panties and fuck off?
