Just thought I might get some good conversation on a slow Friday. What would you guys do to the Willys, and why? I have some plans, which haven't changed a whole lot for at least a month, so they must be good
Bring it...
just consider that I am a cheap bastard

Heres what I am starting with on the willys

looks like you need another pile of what you already have, that way you could pile both piles together and make a heep

*Pile of Scout, and Blazer not pictured*

I think it takes at least three piles to make a heep.

Um, I would put it together and wheel it!

Seriously though, what kind of wheelin do you want to do? Do you have anything besides what's in the pictures? Most people put Buick or Chevy V6s in them. Hooder and I are both running Turbocharged Ford four bangers.

Rocks... I hate mud.
Well, I'm picking up a RC44 front from a club member, a Scout 44 rear from another guy. My buddy has a 91 S10 Blazer 4x4, shot brakes for $500...there is the engine and tranny. Locate a CJ D300, gonna hack, chop and weld on new hangers for YJ springs, I am ripping the Hydro steering valves, pump and ram off of a JD Square-Back combine, the guy only wants $50 for everything.
Then I guess duct tape and JB Weld it together and beat the piss out of it

What am I forgetting, or what is good/bad about this setup?

Oh yeah, I would like to run 36" SX's, weld the rear, detroilet the front, 5.13's

What about a full cage and some seats w/ 5 point harnesses? Might need a new fuel cell . What about the steering column?

Fuel cell is up in the air, right now. '91 Honda CRX seats (it's gonna be a ricer). I know a guy who knows some guys with benders, so I'll make a 6 point cage....I'm thinking the SC 40 pipe rollbar isn't gonna help much on the flops. The combine crap comes with a the column.

Drivetrain I'd go 350, sm420, D300.. its short and stout. But I suppose the s10 stuff would do

4.3/700R4.
Little concerned about cooling issues with a SBC in a Willys, but if the 4.3 sucks, I'll hack a TBI 350 in later

Coolings easy. get a GPW grill and you've got room for a huge radiator the problem is length. You may run into that problem with the 700r4... Donno. My 5's pretty much the same length and with the sm420 D18 combo Im runnin an 18" rear shaft

Been thinking about that, I *should* be able to move the motor forward a bit. There is a guy around here running a R4 in his 5 for a couple of years, whith out problems. I prefer auto, but if the tranny became a problem (length) I do have some other cheap options I can try out

Lame,

Any more of those combines laying around? Got a real hankerin to go full hydro, but in my part of the country those parts are like gold.

PM me if you would like to make a few bucks pulling parts for me!

Lame,

I think you should do something similar to what my setup is. CJ-7 frame so you can put a auto and v-8 in and not worry about angles. Then lengthen the tub in the foot area and chop the rear wheelwells up so you can fit the tires. My stock rear wheelwells fit the shape of my 35 mt/r's perfectly, so 36s would really rub. The metal fab would be easy because of the simple design of the body. Having that leg room helps a lot. especially if you are using the column I am thinking of that isn't tilt. That would make it a pain in the a$$ to get in and out.

Just my opinion on how to build it. I am going to try and build another one this way.

Erin,

I have thought about the extendo option, but there is something appealing about the scrawny wheel base. Been kicking around tranny options with Mike, he seems pretty confident that I can run the auto. I think I'm just gonna have to start hacking it and see how everything works..all my ideas are prelim right now, so who knows what it'll end up as My only goal is to have it ready for DTC (can't wait for that again)

Have you thought about the steering shaft? I think that a DJ unit is very similar to the 2A shaft, but I could be wrong. What about steering box/pump, or are you banking on using the hydro set-up? Umm, what else.... you going spring-over?

I'd be suprised if the 700R fits. A 700R with D300 adaptor is 27 inches long. A whopping 14 inches longer than my T18 with D18. I'm pretty sure I havn't got 14 inches of driveshaft to spare (Not even sure I've got 14 inches of driveshaft

Lame,

The wheelbase is really short on those stock. Mine is only 92", and I would like a little more yet. If you are wanting to come and play out here, wheelbase of 90 to 100 would really help. Let me know when you start working on it, I might be up in that area and would love to come and see it.
