Last night me and my g/f were riding home on Hwy 60 when her jeep threw the Serpentine belt. So we stopped and thanks to Po'riggity we installed a new one. And we noticed that the water pump pully was moving around a lot even after the new belt was installed and tight. We checked the bolts on the pully, and they were all torqued. So we started it up again and promplty threw the new belt. Well, after 4 hours of sitting and working on the side of the road, we called it quits and called a tow truck. And $220 later, I'm home with now two broken jeeps. :(

My question. If the water pump fails and overheats, could the shaft warp causing the pully to move around violently as it spins? :(

Why else would that pully be moving around so much causing it to throw the belt?

Please help, this is our primary vehicle.
It's a 94 Jeep XJ 4.0l Automatic, with A/C.

Thanks in advance.

That's what happens sometimes when a water pump goes out. Replace it, it's not that hard.
And if you had AAA the tow would have cost you nothing. ;)

Spank,
Dude, Glad I could come to the rescue LOL.. Im just sorry it was more than a screwed up belt. I guess my guestimation of the cause of the pulley wobble was right on eh? Sorry it cost you more than you thought, and sorry I couldn't be of more help. Hope you get it fixed mang!

Also check the condition of the harmonic balancer - I had a very similar problem where the belt was being milled off bu the timing indicator after jumping a groove - then another and another - until I had one strand running everything  ( it ate two belts before finding the problem... )

Matt

Ditto on the AAA - my junk has been towed at least 15 times in the last few years and cost me 0$ beyond the membership fees - ( that my folks gave me as a gift :D )
