This might have fit a little better on the newb forum but here goes:

I'm looking to add a few inches to my '89 Cherokee so I can fit a little more rubber under her. Is there a way to find out what tires my stock wheels are compatible with? I'd like to avoid spending money on new wheels for various reasons (including the financial ones) unless there's an argument for buying bigger/different wheels.

The tires that are on her right now are P205x45R15. I've seen some photos of some of the rides that have been posted on this and other forums and I'm thinking maybe 30s on the 15s if that's doable.

All wisdom and advice is appreciated.

my roomate is running 32 MTR's on stock wheels with a little rubbing in the rear. They do sit well inside the body. My 35's are on less backspacing. 3.5???? Alittle rubbing on spring towers. but nothing else. hth.

It would be wise to take your own advice.:flipoff2:
I posted here expecting people who have some familiarity with XJs to read the post. If I don't get the info I'm looking for I'll certainly post on the newb forum. I'm not sure if that was meant as advice or a flame... but :flipoff2: back at'cha! :D

Anyone else have some advice before I move this to a different board?

We just went through this on the XJList, you can probably go with something up around the 30-31" range, depending on the width... ie - dont be putting 12" wide tire on a 6-7" rim, you might be able to get it to mount, but it won't be pretty or work well! With a stock rim you should be able to go to the 30-31" range with a 9.5" width at max. If you go much taller than that, which you can, but then it's going to be rubbing and if you do any flexing then there will need to be some trimming in your future too. Anything much taller than 31" then you're starting to look at lifts on a XJ, the general rule of thumb that I've been told is, if you're going to be going to 33's+ at 12" wide then you're looking at 6+ inches of lift, to get any decent flex.... now with that being said, there are alot of combinations out there that you can probably get away with! ..but you gotta look at the over all picture... how do you drive it, what is it mostly used for, where do you drive it, etc.... Also, if you go too big, then you're looking at gears to be able to push those big meats! ...the 4.0 will push big tires with stock gearing, but the gas mileage will kill you! :) ...just another data point!

I guess I was a little vague in my original post about that. I'm planning on adding about a 3" lift to the girl. I like how the combination of that kind of a lift and 30-31" knobbys look on the old XJs.

Considering how much the suspension is sagging, it'll be a big boost with that and taller tires.

If you're getting a 3" lift, get some 31" tires on the stock rims, works great. You'll just have to modify the steering stops so you don't rub the LCA's (not that it's a big deal to rub them even if you do). I've run this combo for over 3 years now and have spent the time doing all the mods necessary to go higher, stronger, and run a bigger tire. My 31's are about dead now and it's time for 33's.

This crap is so out of place it's pathetic. Those who responded seriously are just helping to propagate the problem. They should be banned for a week.

This post should be getting flamed over in the Newbie forum, after all, the newb forum is the place to grow up and learn our ways. A simple search could have answered this kiddie shit.

If we don't maintainance this situation, it will get outta hand quick-like.
Those of you who are offended by this attitude need to read
this and pay close attention to 37, 38, and 81.:flipoff: :flipoff:

I didn't read this until after the fact, but did you see this post?

I don't wanna end up having to scroll down thru 3 pages of this kinda crap just to find 1 or 2 interesting threads. This site is huge, more new folks are showing up everyday and that is fine, but they need to follow the guidelines the rest of us use.
