I was considering this on my 1989 cherokee, i can get a 1996 complete motor for $850 but how much wireing, ect. needs to be changed? has anyone done this?

I think that off-road.com has a writeup on doing this, but maybe it was 4x4 wire. I'm sure a google search will produce more than you want.

You have to change all the wiring and computer, its a real pain in the ass especially with the earlier years the cherokees wiring was a mess of sh!t. Not worth it.

Now you could use the block and put a pre-91 head on it, but it wouldn't be HO.

Is your 89 a Renix fuel system or the Mopar FI ?

The 96 is OBD-II and would require a lot of re-wiring to get it to work, plus duplicate sensors to get your gauges to work.

you shouldn't have to swap computers. as long as you adapt the non-ho TPS to the ho t-body you'll pretty much be golden.

The renix system can easily run a HO long block.

thanks for the info guys, right now this is just an idea, my current engine has a 192,xxx miles on it but still runs strong & doesn`t burn any oil...it just leaks a little from the vavle cover. i`ll probly just end up selling the XJ & getting an older ZJ.

Tony W, I thought OBD-II wasn`t used until 1997(for all cars not just Jeeps), 1996 should still have OBD-I? just a FYI:flipoff2:
