I think I am going to go with a dedicated set of trail tires so I might as well look into bead locks, which ones are better, alum or steel rings? Also, because I run D60/14 bolt I would need either 16.5" or 15" (and grind calipers) to get a good tire selection, any pro's and con's to either size other than the grinding. The price seems to be about the same (200.00) for most brands, not enough to choose one over the other, and have heard that some are a bitch to mount/center etc. any ones I should avoid or you would suggest over another?

I'm looking a beadlocks too. From what I've read on this board it seems like Champions are the easiest to mount and balance. What does Stephen think of the TrailReady's he has in his rig. They are making the 16.5's now. There is a S.N.O.R.T. guy up here in Washington making some nice looking ones too. He had a post within the last week or so with pics. How big of tires are you going to be running with the UAV?

IMHO - I would stick with 16.5" rims, get some TrailReady beadlocks or the TireLoc's and skip the grinding on your front calipers.

Plus, I am finding that you can very often get GREAT deals on 16.5" tires - since most wheelers don;t want them any more

Has anyone seen the 16.5" beadlocks? Do they have a inner safety bead? Stock 16.5's don't have a safety bead so they can't be aired down. Seems to me that would still apply to beadlocks if there is no inner bead. Outside would stay nice and tight but inside blows right off.

I'm using 16.5 Humvee wheels with the internal beadlock, maybe BIGFECK's design is similier to those(?). There is a mention of a "a steel band that acts as a safety bead".
The Humvee wheels are great, locking inner and outter beads, if you can deal with the extra deep backspacing.

I have a set of hummer wheels. The back spacing is a killer. I havn't been able to use them because of it. Thanks for the input though.
I ended up using a set of aftermarket steel wheels and welded in a safety bead on both inner and outer beads. This works well for me. I'm sure the ones Bigfeck is making are much better than mine.
I was just curious how the others have dealt with this problem.

Eaton Makes fairly good ones. Thats what I bought. They are pretty cheap too. 15x8 to 15x14's. I bought 5 15x10 8 lug wheels for $690 sent to my door. Also made an aluminum ring for them. Mainly for Looks

How do you take the wheel off with those things on there? Is the whole big enough to get your hand in to thread the lugs back on?

If you look at it close the Ring is held on by only 8 bolts. So, I just air the tire down to 5 pounds or so and take the 8 bolts out, take the ring off, then take the wheel off and do the opposite when putting it back on.
Sounds like alot but they sure look cool.

You're right. I so wish I had to air down my tires and take half the bolts out of my beadlocks before removing the rim. Not to mention retorquing all the bolts again. Where do I sign up Could you make mine w/a big rainbow in the center, though?
