YJ on 421's

Here are some pics and info on my project Jeep. My goal is an all purpose all weather vehicle that preforms like a Mog and allows enough room for family and some gear. The approach is simple and straight forward. I do not wish to reinvent what the Mercedes engineers already know. Therefore the base chassis is mostly stock, just rearranged. This is the donner vehicle, 1973 421 Unimog.

When are you going to moab? I'd like to meet you and check out your Mog.
Moab Vender Show Easter Jeep Safari

I will be leaving (tomorrow) Weds morning and spend most of the time at our booth inside the vendor show. Just look for the Unimog. The only other Unimog there is probably Tom Woods Drivelines.
I will also be trying to go out in early May with some other wheelers.
Hope to see you there, Tyson
Tyson,
I remember that 'mog from a while back. It was on Ebay, yes?
Was it you I talked to at the time?

Any bits left over? Hows the cab? What about that tipping ram I see under there? Always on the hunt for mog bits........

All I have left is the 2 speed pto, shafts and blocks. This is how the rest of it looks currently. Should be good for deep water!:D

Looking damn good.
I like the rear shackle blocks welded into the front of the frame.
And the 615 should be a helluva lot easier to work on without all that 'mog cab in the way.

If ever I get my "spares" 421 shipped over here I'd love to build a Land Rover bodied 'mog. Never thought abut that rear/front ttube swap. I've always tought I'd build an 88" Series1 LR/421 thing, but 109" would make it ride better.

HHmmmmm! 2 speed pto set-up, eh?.....

Sean
Although I guess you're not using a Merc engine.
Using a 2wd trans and drive shaft into the Merc' 4spd?
Clever on the top end of the 4x2 as a 4spd transfer case..1:1 top, and 4.5:1 bottom end. Why not keep the low range too for a 8spd transfer set? 1:1 down to 14.5:1

NOBODY else would have anything like that!

Even 4th on main trans would give 120:1.... 4:1 average for a 1st gear?....480:1

You got me thinking now!

An o/d trans with a decent NA engine would maybe even give you the ability to do, say, 60mph at 3000rpm, and have the ability to hold it!
My 421 does about 40mph at 3000rpm, but the slightest hill means 3rd gear, 15mph!

Wow, and I thought only us 2 1/4 litre Landrover drivers had thick skins, crawling up hills at 30 mph with other trucks flying past at 60.
Bill.
That's nothin'!
We've got a couple of road/rail 406's that weigh in at about 6500kg.
They have trouble topping 30mph on a flat road. Hills=About 5-10mph because the torque convertors slip so much at that weight.
But they are plated to tow 300 Tonnes each!

Yea, but it is probably not quite as embarrassing struggling along in a bigger heavier rig between jobs compared to commuting on public highways in aforementioned LandRover.

I noticed your in Alberta. Do you have any pictures of these rigs here?
I'm in Alberta, and one of the 421's is here with me, but the rest are still in home in the UK.
Got some pics somewhere though.

"TOO DAMN COLD LAKE"?.........As in 4 Wing?

Sean
Sean,
You are right about the gearing, I just thought the lower gear set would add extra dead wieght. I have about 45" to shoe horn a V8 and OD auto trans and mate to the merc trans. Or maybe go all electric, I don't know yet.
Tyson
ps. complete pto set up cheap! PM me.
Without the lower gear set can you still get reverse on the 'mog box?
I know you'll have reverse on the main trans, but can the 'mog box take being driven backwards?.....

PM away...

Sean
I am hoping for really good tech? Not much progress to report, I think I may be leaning toward a 4x2 trans with torque converter. I anticipate the rig weighing in at 4000 lbs and I would like to put as much power to it as I can.
Anybody have some insights into the torque converter trans and if I can bolt up some ponies to it?
Thanks, Tyson
Can't see why you couldn't put tonnes of power through a 4x2 with TC.
We've got 2 406 road/rail 'mogs at home. Still only have the 84hp, but they carry 5000lbs of ballast in the box, and a rated tow of 660,000lbs each.
I'd say the trans and TC could take a helluva lot of power running at only 4000lbs!

The Little 421

I just ran across this thread - it looks like you've got a good start on the project. I'm a little sad to see the truck as a whole relegated to the scrap heap, but if you don't have a farm and need a tractor, there's not much to do with it.

That 421 sat behind my shop for about 4 years, then it sat in front for another year while someone else thought about restoring it, then you had it picked up from my front yard.

Did you fund part of the project selling off all the other bits and pieces? (hydraulics, bed ram, cab, engine, etc?) That motor ran great, when the glow plugs worked...

Sad

Yes it is sad to see a Mog like that parted out. But on the flip side, there are alot of other Mogs that got the parts they were looking for to make them whole and functional again. The only part to go to scrap was the bare bones frame, less all the brackets I could cut off. Sad? Yes but overall I see a net positive. I had the same internal conflict with the early Broncos I used to tinker with. Sometimes it just comes down to partsville. And thanks to you my mog based project is finally taking shape, Thank you!

Swag, I was thinking along the same lines as you. The comment about slippage got me thinking though. I suppose I could try it and if I don't like the torque transfer curve I could have it modified to suit the application.
Thanks, Tyson
Playing with 404

Sadly no progress to report. I have kept myself a little to busy and every break I get, I drag out the 404 and have a little too much fun abusing it. Last outing produced a 2 1/4 roll. I will start another thread with pics of how the roll bar held up.
