Yesterday I got two Dana 60 35 spline Yukon shafts. One of them has all the markings of being heat treated, dark brown, with blue and yellow. The other shaft looks like it came straight out of the lathe real purdy.

Sorry no pictures but anyone else experienced this?

I have heard that depending on the batch at heat treat weather it in the middle or on the edges the amount of heat treat varies greatly. I wouldn't run it. If it grenades super easy say goodbye to your locker.

I've got a buddy who just installed Yukon shafts in his rear 12b. One trip to Parker, and the left axle bent severely. Not even that tough of wheelin... After much difficulty getting it out, we see that the splines were heavily twisted. One shaft is fine, the other is all messed up. I think one possibly missed H/T.

Heat treating does not always cause discoloration, although I would find a way to double check. Hardness test on the end of the axle?
