best diesel engine to swap into early-model CJ5?

Have spent the last few years building this monstrosity of a motorhome, and now that it's almost finished, it's time to start putting together a little Jeep to go with it. Have a fresh Buick 225 V6 and an SM465 and Dana 18 transfercase with a Warn overdrive (25%). But I just put a brand new LDS465 multifuel engine in my motorhome, and I'll have the ability to process fuel onboard, using this system that Racor helped me put together. So it would make a lot of sense to use some kind of a little diesel engine in this Jeep.

Mercedes OM617 would have been a good option, but it's too big to fit in the short-hood early model CJ5. The 4-cylinder OM616 fits, but what I read about this guy's swap was not particularly encouraging.

My Grandpa had a Jeep with a Perkins 4-cylinder diesel in it, but they didn't make very many of them and it doesn't seem worth the trouble to go find one.

Yesterday I found a practically brand new Isuzu C240 engine that off some kind of military genset, so did a little bit of research and found out that Jeep actually installed that engine in some CJ7's from 80-82 for the international market (here). So I looked up the specs and it makes a bit more torque than the OM616. That spec-sheet made me wish I'd found a 4JG1T though...

So what do you guys think? Is this little Isuzu engine a good candidate? What other engines should I consider? TDI might be an option? Looks like OTT makes an adapter that would allow me to use the SM465 with that engine.

EDIT - here's the list of engines up for consideration so far:

Kubota V2003 MT / V2203 / V2403
Onana L423 / Cummins A-series
Cummins B3.3T
VW 1.9L TDI
Isuzu C240
Isuzu 4JG1T
Perkins 4.108

Thanks for the link Mieser. Those Kubota V2003 MT /V2203 DI/ V2403 engines look pretty neat.

Another person on the steelsoldiers forum suggested looking into the Cummins A2300T.

TDI might be an option? Looks like OTT makes an adapter that would allow me to use the SM465 with that engine using a Toyota bellhousing.

What did you pull that out of? Anything we'd be able to find down here?

This post on the 4BTswaps forum, and the little bit of research that I've done, has got me thinking something like one of these Kubota's might be the ticket.

The Kubota V2203 is quickly becoming abundant due to the increased EPA regs that California has in place. Anyone that hauls in that state has to comply, so the reefer trailers have to be new or retrofitted with the newer complyant motors. Most of them are 2003 and newer with low hrs, so they are good to go. Find them at big truck/trailer repair shops for 700-1000 or liquidator sites are getting 1200+. Do some looking while you are in Cali.

eventually ill be throwing a 98 TDI into my 2000 cherokee.

using a toyota 4 speed and dual case top shifting t cases.

they are super small engines. can be tuned (if left electric) and are already capable of pushing a jetta very well in stock form.

the weight difference between the jetta and a cherokee is 100 pounds or something like that.

food for thought

The Isuzu C240 engines I found all ended up selling for way too much, but think I might have scored a Kubota V2203-DI. Friend of a friend runs a refrigeration business and has a bunch of them, so I should have one within the next 2-3 weeks. Now I have to figure out how to adapt my SM465 to the back of it. From what I've read, Phoenix Casting might make an adapter to go from the engine (SAE #4) to a Chevy bellhousing. Have to call them to see how much length that might add, and then figure out what I'll have to do with the flywheel and throwout bearing and starter and all that other stuff. Capable of designing/fabricating all this stuff, but would rather purchase these parts if anybody else has already figured it out.

I live in Italy, here CJ with the ISUZU C240 were fairly common in the '80s, AMC made a bellhousing to match the T176 using ISUZU clutch so it bolt straight on, the only thing i dislike is the lack of HP, it's a kinda neverending engine but it doesn't give a lot "emotions" when pushing the gas pedal...
A buddy of mine made a swap using the ISUZU 2.8 Turbo engine came out from a Trooper, it has decent power and great fuel mileage, also fit the CJ hood and bellhousing pretty easily, definately a good candidate for the swap.

Tell me if you nee more info

The C240's were for sale at auction and they got a ton of money for them. Way more than I wanted to spend on one of those engines. Was really only thinking about using one because they popped-up, and still might if I find a good deal on another one.
Be aware of the large gaps in the 465s ratios, you need to have a wider rpm band in order to pull those gaps, even with a 225 they were annoying. What about the old olds 350 diesels? I know that they were crappy in cars, but based on an olds 350 gas they should fit, adapt easily to thhe 465, and spin plenty of rpms. I remember riding in one going 85mph with an alarm buzzer going off to tell you to slow down to below 55 and save fuel like president Carter says. Although a buickv6 hei motorcraft 2bbl 5.38s warn od and 35"s gets great mpg in my bros m170 (military cj6) my cj5, 5.38s 465, 33"s and no od, not so much. Don't those multifuels use a little gasoline in some of their fuel recipes?
Thanks, I've thought about that. Have a Warn OD and was if I end up with a low-revving diesel, was thinking that I'd replace the shifter with an electric solenoid and put a button on the transmission shifter so I could split gears. But a friend just gave me an old Muncie M20 with a vertical-gate Hurst shifter and an AA Dana 18 transmission adapter. So might end up using that instead, just depending on the engine.
I'd do a gray-market Isuzu engine/trans/t-case. One of the West Coast importers of Japanese engines should be able to hook you up. I think there are some in Texas also.

4JG1T drivetrain.
Thanks, that might be worth looking into. Remember looking up the specs for the C240 and wishing it was a 4JG1T.
