440 to 413?

Maybe a dumb question, but I'm really new to Dodges. I have an '85 W150 with a '75 440 that needs a rebuild and a 727 backing it. There's a local guy with a '73 413, sans flexplate, with 17,000 miles (he says) and the associated 727 with the same mileage.

If I wanted to swap in the 413, would I be looking at anything more complicated than bolting my old intake manifold, carb, exhaust, and flexplate?

My understanding is that the only difference is about 0.013" of bore, but I've read a few things about internal vs. external balance. Basically, the 413 might have an internally balanced steel crank (up to 72, 73 was the switchover year) and the 75 will have an externally balanced iron crank. I just need an engine to keep my truck running, so I'm not concerned about power or performance as long as it runs.

If that 413 is from a 73, then it has some extreme differences from the 440. The heads are different. the exhaust manifolds are specific to those heads. the two will not interchange. The water pump is massive and pumps water directly into the heads. You can switch the heads from the motors and the front accessories from the 440 to the 413. Watch out for the 413 timing set up too. It MIGHT be a reverse rotation motor with gear to gear timing. The 413 will have dish top pistons as well. Netting it a whopping ~7.5 compression ratio. The industrial 413's are a bit of a mystery to most. The crank on them are forged, as well as the rods. The intakes are identical to the other RB motor's though. I'm building one of these for my 85 RC project. They have extremely thick cylinder walls too. Some have bored them out to 440's. Mines going to 426.

Yeah, what he said^^ You really need to see this 413 in person. If it is the industrial type like described above, it would be a big hassle. If it looks like a normal passenger car engine, all you need to do is remove the weights from your torque converter and bolt the engine in. Being a 413 from that year with those miles, it must be from a motorhome. I'm pretty sure both the standard engine and the industrial one with the crazy heads and water pump were available depending on the chassis. You need to see what it is.

Theres pictures of mine the day it came home. 26000 miles. There were no standard 413's this late. Any 413 WILL be an industrial motor. Or some people call them HT413's. They are strong engines. Mine was from a dump truck. They are designed to run at full throttle and never get hot(funky head design). These were torque monster motors. They were at the top of the heap in heavy duty engines in their day. You do have to watch out for the cranks... Mine is a 6 bolt flywheel. Some were an odd 8 bolt. Just put some new pistons in it(good luck finding them) for more compression. Or be cool and run a turbo on it...:smokin:

I used a 413 reverse rotation gear set in my 440 marine engine.

So I guess the center line and cam line is the same as a RB.

Wow! Thanks for the replies.

I attached the only two pics available of the engine, here's what he has to say about it:

"this is a 73' 413 big block dodge engine and a heavy duty 727 auto trans. im needing to sell this in the next couple of days so i came down from 350 for the motor and 125 for the trans to 300 for both. this is a great deal . the engine and trans has 17000 miles on them. it is a factory 4 barrell engine , it needs a water pump and pump housing . it has the heavy duty industrial heads. it could use paint. it has a steel crankshaft and the strength rib casting on the block. the trans has the heavy duty bolt on yoke. i dont have the torque converter or flex plate or starter. this would make a great engine for your project, maybe a rat rod? .
please dont ask for me to part this engine out , it is too good to do that , unless you will give 300 for the part you need. first 300 cash and i will load the motor and trans for you.

you are welcome to come look at them. please call xxx-xxx-xxxx , plese leave message if no anwser and we will get back to you.
if and when it sells i will remove this listing. thanks for looking and GOD BLESS"

Aside from this being dirt cheap ($300 for engine and tranny) and a tank of an engine, I'm leaning more and more towards not getting this thing, since I'll have to drive 3 hours round trip and money is kinda tight for me right now.

What kind of hassle will I be looking at in order to get the flexplate and torque converter? I get the feeling that these aren't standard items...

If it is a 6 bolt flexplate, its the same as any RB motor as far as I know. Good luck find the water pump stuff though. Occasionally they are on ebay. The front part is on there right now. You'll need the rest of it though..

From your pics, it almost looks it's 2 barrel. But those are some fuzzy pictures. Those ARE the exhaust manifolds though. If it runs without a rebuild(I doubt it looking at that picture) you could swap it in to rebuild the 440. I'll tell you that I got mine with the big block 727 AND supposedly rebuilt 205with the matching tailhousing for 800. If I was you, I'd pick up the trans. The big block 727's are not so easily found. They usually go for more than what he wants for both! The engine If you want to go all out is a good core for building an engine though. I forget ehen they stopped putting the forged cranks in them, those are good pieces. The rods are the same as the old hemi's too. I read that somewhere. I don't have a hemi to compared mine to though. I drove 8 hour round trip for mine...

IMHO........you would be money ahead to rebuild the 440. Finding parts for the 413 will be difficult, and EXPENSIVE! The 440 is likewise a torque monster, and high performance parts are available everywhere. This might be why the guy is selling so cheap................he can't find the parts.

You would be money ahead going with the 440 rebuild. Had I found one before my 413 I would of gone that route if that tells you anything. Now I have it and its so different I'm going to run it. As far as high performance, cams, intakes and carbs from any RB will work. They DO make headers for these heads.

I'm going to bore mine to 426 and say it's a 426 ramcharger.. 20 years newer.
