the windshield frame will fit off a YJ. Hard top, doors and front clip and be made to fit too. nothing else. tail gates on YJ's and TJ's swing out. the Cj's drop down. most guys prefer to have a CJ gate instead of the YJ or TJ one.

i have a yj windsheild frame on my cj tub and the little plates inside to hold it up don't line up right. i had to make new plates. pretty easy to remidy but worth mentioning

Ok cool Thanks. I have a ton of body work to do on this tub. But i am very determined! I got a small idea in my head. Making a willys grill and fenders fit and look right. Call me stupid call me crazy. I prefer crazy.

In addition to the hold-down bolt holes not lining up, the YJ windshield frame won't have the holes in the bottom of the frame or at the bottom of the window for the CJ's defroster system.

TJ or YJ gates can be made to fit, they are the same size, but as stated, they hinge sideways instead of down, so you'd need to remount the hinges and mount the TJ/YJ striker.

 They are in the same spot? 79-95 had the same style heater system. 91-95 was a little different, but could still be swapped in. All the defroster holes will line up just fine from a CJ tub to a YJ frame.

Yes, the main heater box will swap in, but the OP asked if a YJ windshield frame would work on a CJ tub. My answer is correct - on the CJ, the defrost air is blown up through oval holes in the cowl and through the inside of the windshield frame. On the YJ, the defroster duct sits in front of the cowl and behind the dash, and the air does not go through the windshield frame.

So, if you put a YJ windshield frame on a CJ, you won't have the proper holes in the YJ windshield frame for the defrost air to pass through.

EDIT: PS... you could switch to the entire YJ heater unit and ductwork, but if you're building a CJ, that might be more trouble than it's worth because of the YJ's vacuum-operated heater box controls.

I stand corrected. Were the early YJ's the same as the CJ's though? I had an 88 for parts and everything was the same if I remember correctly?
I just took an 87 Wrangler tub apart and it was not the same as the CJ, so since 87 is the first year of the YJ I would say all years of the YJ were different from the CJ with respect to the defroster.

Yeah, you can't run a flat CJ dash with a YJ defroster and windshield frame.

I replaced my CJ tub w/ a YJ tub and had to cut the defroster ovals in the tub.

I've never seen a YJ windshield frame up close but, I suppose you can cut the holes in the bottom to work w/ the CJ tub and on the top for the plastic defroster deflecters (or whatever they are called).

This should answer the YJ/CJ Defroster Differences...

Take a look at the picture. I just converted my '90 YJ to CJ defroster ducts. As far as the windshield frame lock tabs, it seams that the holes in the dash are offset about 1/4" or so. I am going to have to either make new plates or cut the the weld nut out of the tub and move it over to match the CJ parts. Also, if you are putting a CJ dash in a YJ, the upper part of intake duct and the flap that controls the heat air temp in the lower have a different cable setup and need some mods to work with CJ control knobs and cables. I opted to put a CJ heater box in since I had two lying around.

The part on the right is what I cut out of my YJ tub. You can see where the YJ defroster ducts squeeze between the dash and cowl vs. stright up through on the CJ. Also, since I am a bit of a purist I filled in the two holes where the YJ windshield washer squirter's snapped in favor of the single CJ squirter.

One more thing to add. If you can, always try to use a YJ tub. They are made of galvanized steel so fair a little better in the rust department.

I initially made new plates for mine, but I decided I wanted to make everything stock CJ, so I instead moved the weld nut. They came out really easily, just put a wrench on it and twist. Then you can drill new holes in the right place and weld the same nut back in as I did.

I'm pretty lazy sometimes... Want to send those modified plates you're not using? J/K Soon I am going to dissect my CJ windshield frame to figure exaclty why they rot out all the time and then try to redesign it internally to fix whatever drainage problem cause the rust. If I am not so lazy I will do a write up on it.
