I've got a smokin' deal on a built D300...4:1, 32 spline rear output, cable shifters, bla, bla. I'm wondering if doing a JB Conv. 32 spline front output would be worth it or not. Seems to me the intermediate shaft would blow the case in half before a 32 spline output would break.

I'm running a tunned 4.3 and 4L60e and 5:89's in the diffs.

Thoughts? If loosing front outputs on the D300 are common I'll go ahead and get it done before I put it in the buggy. If it's a fuse that will keep the case in one piece I'll keep it stock.

Do it. It's relatively cheap insurance. Getting the bearing retainer machined can be a PITA. I'd suggest having a friend of three with D300s get together and have them machined at the same time to knock down setup costs. Doing three takes about the same amount of time as just one.

I did it after I blew a factory output.

My case was totally stock besides 4:1 gears when I blew the front output.

If you have the case all blinged up already it is worth the low cost for the front output.

The only thing that has broken on my Dana 300 was the front output. To be honest i am surprised that it was the front that let loose I always expected the the rear to go first. When it broke I upgraded the rear as well.

Okay, I'll do it then. Hmmmm. Maybe a Stak replacement case while I'm at it. I'll still be way under the cost of an Atlas at that point and I believe the replacement case will accommodate the larger bearing/seal for the JB output(?) If so the cost could be offset some what.

For those who have done the front output conversion, what is a fare price and/or what did you pay for the machining?

TIA!

I've machined a few so I would say expect to get charged for one hour of labor. I'm sure it can be done faster, but I think that is about what you will end up paying. Not sure what the labor rate would be, but I would guess it could be anywhere from $65-$100+. Make sure to find a reputable shop because they could easily screw it up by not keeping the bore concentric, square, or over sizing the fit on the bearing race.

What is really cheap? A built dana 300 is still a dana 300 and nowhere near an atlas. I did the dana 300 thing built heavy outputshafts, then started cracking cases.

I run 100% stock 300's and put all the reduction in the diffs (6.17) and I still crack cases......AND.....crack ring gears regularly:shaking: No broken outputs though. My car is built around the "compactness" of a 300 so I'm gonna end up doing a complete STAK 300........but for now I just drive carefull like:grinpimp:

How is built 300 with jb gears outputs and a stak case "no where near an atlas" ? Have you compared JB's gears to the Atlas. I think they are like 1/4" difference in the width. I agree the Atlas is stronger, but I wouldn't say "no where near an atlas" Assuming your talking stak case and JB components. Every where I've looked the gears that break are either stock or Tera Flex gears. I'd like to see some broken JB gear pics. Especially broken JB gears that were inside a Stak case.
Later,
Bobby

It's worth doing if you've got it apart. The output itself is cheap.

Do yourself a favor and remove the shift rails before taking it to the machine shop. I had a buddy pull the front bearing retainer to take it over to get machined, and he left the rails in it. Nice lil 2-hour @ $75/hr setup fee for that one. :shaking: The actual machine work was less than an hour but shop rate applies whether the mill's turning or not. That's why it'll work out in your favor if you can get someone else to have one done at the same time.
