14 Bolt Detroit ??

I installed a 14 bolt 10.5" FF detroit locker and it seems that the locker allows the wheels to have a excessive amount of play between forward and reverse. Looking a image of the detroit it appears that the teeth layout migt allow quite a bit of movement...is this normal?

This isn't my first locker install by any means, but can this be installed in a wrong fashion to allow excessive "tire backlash" or is this normal to the function of this locker?

I've got 5.38 gears and the pinion appears to be able to turn approx. 1/4 turn maximum before the locker begins turning the tires...

Sounds like a Detroit to me. Mine has a bunch of slop between forward and reverse.

it actually reminds me a lot of how a lock right feels with that oversized elliptical-shaped hole for the center pin. that's the best way i can describe it.

That sounds pretty much how my 14 bolt Detroit is. They do have A LOT of play in them, but they flat out work. Run it.

Alright, thanks for the input guys. I just thought it seemed looser than it should because the detroit in the front D60 is much tighter....i'll run

Checked it today, I would say that it is maybe 1/16th of a turn or a little more. Definitely not 1/4 turn.

1/4 turn is perfectly acceptable. it will vary with age and gear ratio.

I bought it used, so i didn't have instructions with it.

I checked it again last night and I'd probably say it's closer to 1/8 of a turn slack than 1/4...i'm gonna roll with it, thanks for the help guys
